Associate Editor, Cross Journal – Temporary (Multiple roles)

We are currently looking for two talented Associate Editors to join the PLOS journals’ editorial team in our Cambridge, UK office or San Francisco, US office on a temporary basis for a period of up to one year.  The Associate Editors will work across the suite of PLOS journals with a focus on either PLOS ONE, PLOS Biology and/or PLOS Medicine. These Associate Editors will be involved in a wide array of editorial matters.

Responsibilities

PLOS ONE

Editorial Responsibilities

  • Facilitate Quality Control (QC) checks upon submission
    • Advise on all consults relating to the QC of manuscripts (e.g. COI, ethics, adherence to scope, etc.)
  • Submission scanning of manuscripts
    • Vetting of submitted manuscripts to ensure they are appropriate for external review, obtaining advice as needed
  • Attending to editorial disputes and problems
    • Handle author disputes/editorial related complaints as required
    • Assist on manuscripts that need actions through the editorial process
  • Academic Editor related Tasks
    • Scanning of accept decisions
    • Advise on assigning Academic Editors to papers
    • Inviting peer reviewers when requested by Academic Editors

PLOS Biology/PLOS Medicine

Editorial Responsibilities

  • Handle a proportion of research manuscripts submitted to the journal from submission through peer review and publication, including presenting manuscripts to editorial team, interacting with reviewers and academic editors around manuscript assessment and review, making decisions on manuscripts and communicating with authors.
  • Writing and editing lay summaries, blog posts, press releases, and other related materials
  • Participating in the daily running of the journal, including commissioning and assessment of non-research content

Other responsibilities for all journals

  • Provide editorial and scientific guidance to various internal groups within PLOS
  • When indicated, work collaboratively with Product, Marketing, Production, IT, and Advocacy groups
  • Be involved in the advocacy activities of the PLOS journals and PLOS

     Qualifications and Experience

Associate Editor – PLOS Medicine (Temporary)

We are currently looking for a talented Associate Editor to join our team in a temporary role due to last from six to nine months in our San Francisco, US or Cambridge, UK offices.  This role is a maternity cover and may be extended beyond the period described depending on organization needs.

As an integral member of the editorial team running an open-access international medical journal, the post-holder will be responsible for assessing research manuscripts, handling peer reviews, commissioning articles and contributing to other parts of the journal – as well as to PLOS as a whole.

Director, Advocacy

Reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), the Director, Advocacy has overall responsibility for the advocacy direction, vision and execution to support the PLOS mission and goals and overall management responsibility for the experienced group of highly motivated and collaborative advocacy staff. The Director, Advocacy will be a key leader of PLOS’ continued innovation to enable transparent, collaborative and barrier-free scientific communication.

As a member of PLOS’ Management Team, the Director, Advocacy contributes to the leadership of the organization and actively participates and collaborates with senior leadership across all departments to establish strategic plans and objectives to execute and support organizational mission and priorities.

Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Establish the advocacy vision and direction to support the overarching strategy and goals of the organization
  • Create and lead the implementation of strategies for advocacy programs supporting cross-PLOS and specific offerings
  • Develop and deliver thought leadership communications and materials to educate and gain support
  • Represent PLOS externally at global venues with senior level thought leaders and stakeholder audiences such as funders, government organizations, institutions and publisher groups to influence policies and practices supporting the PLOS mission

Editorial Manager

We are currently looking for a talented Editorial Manager to join our journals within our  San Francisco office.  Relocation support will be provided if applicable.

The Editorial Manager is the senior member of the journal editorial administration team. The ideal candidate will have a clear understanding of what drives the world of content, particularly in the arena of online publishing and data integrity. A highly organized self-starter with first class communication and problem solving skills is required, ideally also with experience of managing staff and directly liaising with senior academics. Previous experience working in a fast paced environment is a must.

The Editorial Manager line manages staff, and is a principal point of contact for the journal for other departments internally and for external contacts relevant to that publication. The Editorial Manager is also required to work on cross-journal projects and provide some cross-journal management support.

Note: This position works on the administration side of the journal and has no responsibility for evaluating content.

Responsibilities

Journal Management

  • Overall responsibility for journal administration and assignment of tasks within the journals team, plus oversight of freelance and outsource staff if relevant.
  • Ensuring that the standard editorial processes are robust and are being followed according to established objectives.
  • Identification of opportunities for improved efficiencies and customer service.
  • Oversight of relationship with the Editors in Chief and Editorial Boards.
  • Fielding inquiries from the media.
  • Contribute to journal development in collaboration with Editorial Boards, and other senior editorial staff including the Senior Editorial Manager, Director of Publishing Services, and Managing Editor.

  • Coordination with Editorial Managers and Publications Managers to ensure harmonization and efficiency of processes, journal info pages, editorial systems etc.

  • Liaison with other departments and Editorial Staff on other journals and taking responsibility for certain assigned tasks (e.g., coordination of pricing increase information across journals, providing editorial input for web projects etc).
  • Fully represent journal(s) on major cross-journal projects.

Staff Management

  • Recruitment, training and development of PA and PM staff on own journals and beyond.
  • Appraisals for assigned staff and recommendations for promotion as appropriate.

General

  • Representing PLOS externally (e.g., at conferences, events).
  • Aware of PLOS’s broader organization objectives and able to explain to junior staff, as well as external stakeholders, new developments in relation to these objectives.
  • Aware of, and must work within, the budgetary constraints of the journal.

Qualifications and Experience

    • College graduate preferred.
    • 4+ years’ experience in STM Journals publishing within editorial group.
    • Previous experience and aptitude for the management and supervision of staff.

Executive Editor

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Executive Editor has overall responsibility for the editorial and content direction and vision of PLOS journals and has overall management responsibility for an experienced group of highly motivated and collaborative senior editorial staff for all PLOS titles and editorial outputs. The Executive Editor will be a key leader of PLOS continued innovation to enable transparent, collaborative and barrier-free scientific communication.

As a member of PLOS’ Executive Team, the Executive Editor contributes to leadership of the organization and actively participates and collaborates with senior leadership across all departments to establish both short and long term strategic plans and objectives to support organizational mission and priorities.

Responsibilities

Leadership

      • Work with PLOS leadership team and Board to establish overarching strategy and goals for the organization
      • Establish and execute editorial vision and strategy
      • Create and direct content strategies for all seven journals, collections and other new content products
      • Lead journal editorial programs and policies
      • Represent PLOS journals externally to the science, publishing, legislative and field specific communities and contribute to the development of policy positions and recommendations

IT Support Technician

We are currently looking for an IT Support Technician to assist the IT department with support and systems administration within our San Francisco office.

The ideal candidate needs to be a quick study and be able to take charge of technology challenges, requiring little day-to-day supervision. Additional responsibilities include

Ensure outstanding Helpdesk customer service. The Helpdesk is, by its very nature, a high visibility role, and customer satisfaction is crucial. Your customers will include nearly every individual in the organization. You are expected to monitor the ticket queue and balance workloads based on ticket priorities. You will help grow the Helpdesk knowledge management system and internal support websites.

Help administer Corporate Windows systems. While your primary role will be Helpdesk administration, you will be asked on occasion to assist with the operation of our corporate services, including:

Vendor relationship management. Our hardware, software and service vendors are our lifeline to the outside world. Your relationship with these vendors, as it specifically applies to Helpdesk administration, helps ensure corporate equipment and services are delivered in a timely fashion.

Drive efficiencies through the effective use of technology.  We leverage technology and automation to implement efficient, repeatable processes. Effective knowledge management drives down overall ticket turnaround, lowering problem resolution times as well as costs. Quality Assurance Engineer – Temporary (Multiple roles)

Quality Assurance Engineer – Temporary (Multiple roles)PLOS is looking for two talented and creative QA Engineers to join the PLOS development team within our San Francisco office.

These roles are temporary full time roles with full health benefits and paid time off. These roles are open to support organization initiatives that are due to last through 2015.

You’ll join four other QA Engineers, write and maintain automated tests, participate in the release process, and do manual testing when necessary. We use an Agile Scrum development and testing process. The QA Engineers are part of the development scrum team and involved in the entire software development lifecycle.

Responsibilities

      • Execute full QC lifecycles for software product releases.
      • Write and perform tests, manual and automated, feature and regression and performance tests.
      • Contribute to the maintenance and development of a Python-based, Selenium Webdriver/Selenium Grid test framework.
      • Encourage exploratory testing and a culture of quality.
      • Participate in software releases.
      • Collaborate closely with developers, product managers and others to correctly identify, prioritize and resolve issues.
      • Report on test results, file and track bug reports, and assist software engineers in isolating and reproducing bugs.

Qualifications and Experience:

      • Advanced (MD, PhD, or equivalent) Degree is required.
        • Strongly Preferred: MD or equivalent medical degree with residency training preferred (MRCP or equivalent in UK / Board-certified or board-eligible in US).
        • May be considered: PhD with postdoctoral or equivalent research experience in a relevant biomedical field.
      • Excellent written and oral communication skills
      • A keen eye for detail, and outstanding organizational skills
      • Ability to work collaboratively, and in response to firm deadlines
      • A strong interest in scientific and medical publishing and open access
      • Experience in assessing medical research manuscripts and handling manuscripts through peer review at a journal, and/or
      • Experience at commissioning and developmentally editing non-research articles for the magazine section of a research journal

Senior Software Engineer

We are looking for talented and creative software engineers to join the PLOS development team in our San Francisco office. The ideal candidate will be confident, organized self-starter with first-class programming and problem-solving skills. We use an Agile development and testing process, with software engineers, QA engineers, designers, product and project managers working together every day.

Responsibilities

  • Enhance PLOS’s core software products and develop new features.
  • Write and support Java services and libraries in a services-based environment.
  • Work with cutting edge Open Source technologies.
  • Research and adapt new technologies quickly in a dynamic work environment.
  • Collaborate and contribute in solving complex technical problems.
  • Work with the Product team to define new features and create technical requirements.
  • Field questions from an online Open Source community.

Qualifications and Experience

  • College graduate preferred. BS/MS degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in software development.
  • Experience with Java, Spring, Hibernate, and REST.
  • Experience with JQuery and CSS.
  • Experience with message queueing, search indexes, and Python is a plus. We use AMQP and Solr.
  • Experience working with SQL databases.
  • Strong OO design skills and an understanding of design patterns.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well both in a team and individually.
  • Intellectual curiosity, positive attitude, and pride in your work.
  • Contribution to an Open Source software project is a plus.
