Director, Advocacy

Reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), the Director, Advocacy has overall responsibility for the advocacy direction, vision and execution to support the PLOS mission and goals and overall management responsibility for the experienced group of highly motivated and collaborative advocacy staff. The Director, Advocacy will be a key leader of PLOS’ continued innovation to enable transparent, collaborative and barrier-free scientific communication.

As a member of PLOS’ Management Team, the Director, Advocacy contributes to the leadership of the organization and actively participates and collaborates with senior leadership across all departments to establish strategic plans and objectives to execute and support organizational mission and priorities.

Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Establish the advocacy vision and direction to support the overarching strategy and goals of the organization
  • Create and lead the implementation of strategies for advocacy programs supporting cross-PLOS and specific offerings
  • Develop and deliver thought leadership communications and materials to educate and gain support
  • Represent PLOS externally at global venues with senior level thought leaders and stakeholder audiences such as funders, government organizations, institutions and publisher groups to influence policies and practices supporting the PLOS mission
  • Provide expertise and direction to define PLOS offerings based on needs of advocacy constituents and the opportunities for innovation
  • Lead the Board advocacy sub-group

Coalition and Network Building

Qualifications and Experience

Executive Editor

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Executive Editor has overall responsibility for the editorial and content direction and vision of PLOS journals and has overall management responsibility for an experienced group of highly motivated and collaborative senior editorial staff for all PLOS titles and editorial outputs. The Executive Editor will be a key leader of PLOS continued innovation to enable transparent, collaborative and barrier-free scientific communication.

As a member of PLOS’ Executive Team, the Executive Editor contributes to leadership of the organization and actively participates and collaborates with senior leadership across all departments to establish both short and long term strategic plans and objectives to support organizational mission and priorities.

Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Work with PLOS leadership team and Board to establish overarching strategy and goals for the organization
  • Establish and execute editorial vision and strategy
  • Create and direct content strategies for all seven journals, collections and other new content products
  • Lead journal editorial programs and policies
  • Represent PLOS journals externally to the science, publishing, legislative and field specific communities and contribute to the development of policy positions and recommendations

Editorial Oversight

  • Represent editorial interests to the Board of Directors and Executive Team

  • 12+ years of progressively responsible editorial leadership roles in STM journal publishing with a minimum of 6 years in a leadership capacity

IT Support Technician

We are currently looking for an IT Support Technician to assist the IT department with support and systems administration within our San Francisco office.

The ideal candidate needs to be a quick study and be able to take charge of technology challenges, requiring little day-to-day supervision. As an IT Support Technician, the successful candidate must work efficiently, have excellent time management and interpersonal skills, and work well in a team structure.  Previous experience in a fast paced environment is a must along with being a confident and organized self-starter with first class communication and problem solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary contact for all Tier1 Helpdesk support
  • Quickly address Helpdesk requests, perform triage, keep management informed

Additional responsibilities include

Ensure outstanding Helpdesk customer service. The Helpdesk is, by its very nature, a high visibility role, and customer satisfaction is crucial. Your customers will include nearly every individual in the organization. You are expected to monitor the ticket queue and balance workloads based on ticket priorities. You will help grow the Helpdesk knowledge management system and internal support websites.

Help administer Corporate Windows systems. While your primary role will be Helpdesk administration, you will be asked on occasion to assist with the operation of our corporate services, including:

  • O365, Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, Anti-Virus, Spam Filter Administration
  • Corporate backup/restore (Backup Exec + offsite tape rotations)
  • Windows Software Update Services (WSUS – patch management)
  • Client/Server VPN setup and troubleshooting (Juniper)
  • VoIP Phone System (ShoreTel), HipChat chat system

Maintain standard desktop images. The desktop image solutions we support must be stable and efficient. You will follow best practices with regard to the creation and maintenance of standard desktop images.

Track corporate assets. Part of your role is to electronically track corporate assets as they are purchased, deployed, redeployed, and ultimately decommissioned.

Vendor relationship management. Our hardware, software and service vendors are our lifeline to the outside world. Your relationship with these vendors, as it specifically applies to Helpdesk administration, helps ensure corporate equipment and services are delivered in a timely fashion.

Drive efficiencies through the effective use of technology.  We leverage technology and automation to implement efficient, repeatable processes. Effective knowledge management drives down overall ticket turnaround, lowering problem resolution times as well as costs. By regularly documenting and optimizing repeated tasks, the Helpdesk team invests in its future by continually driving toward optimal processes.

Office and Facilities Manager

We are currently looking for a talented Office and Facilities Manager to join our Administration team within our San Francisco office.

The ideal candidate will be a confident and highly organized self-starter with first class communication and problem solving skills. Previous experience working in a fast paced environment is a must. Responsibilities

  • Management of all office admin and facilities related functions for PLOS’ San Francisco office

  • Consult with senior management on and lead development of space planning, space design, programming and move management for the US office (current space lease expires mid-2017)

Publications Assistant

We have a vacancy for a Publications Assistant in our San Francisco office to join the Publishing Services team.

Key tasks include providing a professional service to authors and reviewers, assisting them with the submission system and supporting the editors working for the journal. Applicants should have good IT skills and experience with online systems or databases would be an advantage.

The ideal candidate will be a confident and highly organized self-starter with first class communication and problem solving skills. Previous experience working in a fast paced environment is valuable. The successful candidate will be a team player, organized and conscientious with good attention to detail and the ability to manage their own workload and meet competing deadlines. Responsibilities:

  • Operating our online submission system to facilitate the peer review process for the journal
  • Assisting authors, reviewers, and academic editors by answering queries by email and phone
  • Supporting the in-house Editors and Editorial and Publications Managers in their tasks
  • Fielding questions from scientists, members of the public and the press about the journal
  • Liaising with authors to ready manuscripts for acceptance and production by the journal

Quality Assurance Engineer – Temporary (Multiple roles)

PLOS is looking for two talented and creative QA Engineers to join the PLOS development team within our San Francisco office.

These roles are temporary full time roles with full health benefits and paid time off. These roles are open to support organization initiatives that are due to last through 2015.

You’ll join four other QA Engineers, write and maintain automated tests, participate in the release process, and do manual testing when necessary. We use an Agile Scrum development and testing process. The QA Engineers are part of the development scrum team and involved in the entire software development lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Execute full QC lifecycles for software product releases.
  • Write and perform tests, manual and automated, feature and regression and performance tests.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and development of a Python-based, Selenium Webdriver/Selenium Grid test framework.
  • Encourage exploratory testing and a culture of quality.
  • Participate in software releases.
  • Collaborate closely with developers, product managers and others to correctly identify, prioritize and resolve issues.
  • Report on test results, file and track bug reports, and assist software engineers in isolating and reproducing bugs.

Senior Editor, Medicine

We are currently looking for an experienced Senior Editor to join our team in either our San Francisco or Cambridge, UK offices.

As an integral member of the editorial team running an open-access international medical journal, the post-holder will be responsible for assessing research manuscripts, handling peer reviews, commissioning articles and contributing to other parts of the journal – as well as to PLOS as a whole.

Responsibilities:

  • Handling a proportion of research manuscripts submitted to the journal from submission through peer review and publication, including presenting manuscripts to editorial team, interacting with reviewers and academic editors around manuscript assessment and review, and clearly communicating decisions to authors.
  • Being involved with editorial writing, press releases, editors’ summaries and other related materials
  • Participating in the daily running of the journal, including non-research content
  • Being involved in the advocacy activities of PLOS Medicine and PLOS

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Advanced (MD, PhD, or equivalent) Degree is required.

We are currently looking for a talented Software Development Supervisor to join our Development team within our San Francisco office. The Software Development Supervisor leads will lead an existing agile team from within.
