Associate Editor – PLOS ONE ( Multiple Roles)

The Associate Editor will work with other editors to oversee the editorial process for submissions to PLOS ONE. The role involves a wide array of editorial responsibilities, from daily submission assessments to the development of editorial policies.

The position offers an opportunity for candidates looking for a move from research into scholarly publishing, as well as those seeking to advance their editorial experience. Director, Software Development/Chief Architect

We are currently looking for a talented  Director of Software Development/Chief Architect (DSD-CA) reporting to the Chief Technology Officer who will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of software development for the organization. The ideal candidate will be a confident and highly organized self-starter with first class communication and problem solving skills.   • Domain knowledge of modern publishing and/or the scholarly research process considered a plus.

Requirements

  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas/concepts and inspire/motivate technical professionals.

  • Practical experience with Agile methods and practices.

Editorial Fellowship, PLOS ONE

PLOS ONE is currently offering a 1-year Editorial Fellowship in our Cambridge UK or San Francisco office to scientifically or medically trained researchers with a keen interest in learning about and contributing to the publication and worldwide dissemination of high-quality research.

Working closely with the professional editorial staff and academic editors of PLOS ONE, the Editorial Fellow will gain experience in the assessment of research manuscript submissions and in the oversight of the peer review process. The Editorial Fellow will develop a complete knowledgebase in the editorial requirements for submissions in a broad range of biomedical disciplines as well as in peer review and publication standards.

Editorial Manager, PLOS ONE

We are currently looking for a talented Editorial Manager to join our Publishing Services team within our San Francisco office.  Relocation support will be provided if applicable.

The Editorial Manager is a senior member of the journal editorial administration team. The ideal candidate will have a clear understanding of what drives the world of scholarly publishing, particularly in the arena of online content and data integrity. A highly organized self-starter with first class communication and problem solving skills is required. The candidate should have experience with managing staff and directly liaising with senior academics. Previous experience working in a fast paced environment is a must.

The Editorial Manager line manages staff, and is a principal point of contact for the journal for other departments internally and for external contacts relevant to that publication. The Editorial Manager is also required to work on cross-journal and organization-wide projects.

 

Note: This position works on the administration side of the journal and has no responsibility for evaluating content.

 

Responsibilities

Journal Management

  • Overall responsibility for journal administration and assignment of tasks within the journals team, including oversight of freelance and outsource staff.
  • Ensuring that the standard editorial processes are robust and are being followed according to established objectives.

IT Operations Engineer

Production Coordinator

We have a vacancy for a Production Coordinator in our San Francisco office to join the Publishing Services team.

The candidate will assist in the final stages of PLOS’s publication process for seven academic journals. Tasks include working with authors, PLOS editorial teams, and outside production and composition vendors to ensure that submissions are complete and articles are published in a timely manner.

The ideal applicant must be exceptionally detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to work cooperatively in a team-oriented environment. This position requires extensive use of computers and online publishing software and the dexterity to work with numerous files simultaneously while maintaining consistent quality control in a fast-paced, goal-oriented, Open Access publishing domain.

Responsibilities

  • Track and resolve queries with authors, internal staff, and production and composition vendors via online issue tracking tools and reports
  • Ensure that manuscripts and supporting files, i.e. figures and tables meet strict, academic publication requirements
  • Monitor articles at various stages to ensure timely publication via an web-based tracking application
  • Conduct quality control reviews on online files
  • Assist with the post-publication syndication process

Qualifications and Experience

Publisher

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Publisher is a key leader of PLOS’ continued innovation to enable transparent, collaborative and barrier-free scientific communication. The Publisher has overall responsibility for building and sustaining a first class publishing operation and growing revenue across the PLOS suite of journals. This includes setting the overall strategy, putting in place development plans and setting objectives to deliver the desired results.

The publisher oversees a team of over 90 professionals across various functions including publishing services and production operations, contributor experience, product management and product marketing.

As a member of PLOS’ Executive Team, the Publisher contributes to leadership of the organization and actively participates and collaborates with senior leadership across all departments to establish both short and long term strategic plans and objectives to support organizational mission and priorities.

Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Work with PLOS leadership team and Board to establish overarching strategy and goals for the organization.
  • Represent PLOS journals and platform externally to the science, publishing and field specific communities and contribute to the development of policy positions and recommendations.
  • Maintain a culture built on teamwork and the highest level of personal ethics.
  • Collaborate and build strong relationships with senior leadership to drive excellence across the PLOS publishing program maintaining alignment with organizational values and goals.
  • Keep abreast of developments in the STM publishing industry including competitor trends and publishing related initiatives as well as keeping up to date with the changing needs of researchers.

Publishing program

  • Establish and execute publishing strategy for current suite of journals.
  • Oversee the financial and operating performance of the publishing program and develop and realize strategies to drive revenue.
  • Develop publishing programs, policies and business models to be adaptive and responsive to a changing landscape.
  • Maximize revenue growth for journals within the current portfolio through effective journal development strategies and realize cost savings from scalable efficiencies.

Product management

  • Monitor emerging industry trends to formulate product strategy and lead analysis to benchmark PLOS’ product offering in relation to competitors.

Management

  • Direct line management of senior management staff in publishing services, contributor experience, product marketing and product management.
  • Ensure effective management practices and structure within publishing group.

Location and travel

  • This position is based in PLOS’ San Francisco, CA headquarters
  • Periodic travel (3-4 times each year) to visit PLOS’ Cambridge, UK office

Qualifications and Experience

  • 12+ years of progressively responsible publishing leadership roles in STM journal publishing with a minimum of 6 years in a leadership capacity. Experience in an open access environment preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree a plus.
  • Experience with medium to large journal publisher operations.
  • Proven experience in growing revenue and realizing new business opportunities.

Senior Editor, PLOS Medicine

We are currently looking for an experienced Senior Editor to join our team in either our San Francisco, CA or Cambridge, UK offices.

As an integral member of the editorial team running an open-access international medical journal, the Senior Editor will have primary responsibility for commissioning and handling review of non-research manuscripts for PLOS Medicine’s Magazine Section, and will develop commissioning strategies to integrate non-research content with primary research articles within the journal’s scope. The Senior Editor will also be responsible for handling the evaluation and peer review of a limited number of research manuscripts submitted to the journal.

Responsibilities:

  • In consultation with the editorial team, developing a strategic vision to guide priorities for topics and article types, series, and collections involving PLOS Medicine’s non-research content
  • In collaboration with the publications services and production teams, developing practical processes to implement the content vision
  • Commissioning articles on priority topics, and leading the evaluation, including peer review, of commissioned and submitted non-research manuscripts, including Perspectives on related research articles; coordinating timing with publication of related articles
  • Handling a proportion of the research manuscripts submitted to the journal, from submission through peer review and publication, including presenting manuscripts to editorial team, interacting with reviewers and academic editors around manuscript assessment and review, and clearly communicating decisions to authors.
  • Writing editorials, press releases, editors’ summaries and related content.

The Senior Financial Analyst will be responsible for providing FP&A support, financial consultation, and other duties as assigned. The ideal candidate will be a confident and highly organized self-starter who is willing to roll up their sleeves and collaborate with peers and managers to achieve organization’s financial objectives. First class communication and problem solving skills in addition to previous experience working in a fast paced environment is a must.

Responsibilities:

      • Financial Planning and Analysis
        • Assist in volume, revenue and expense budgets, forecasts and related analyses for all PLOS journals.
        • Take ownership of in-depth outsourcing expense analysis, forecasting, budgeting, reporting and variance explanations.
        • Take ownership of monthly expense variance reporting, analysis and J/E re-classes.
        • Partner with Business Analyst on operational work flow analysis.
        • Act as the finance lead for key areas of the organization (Editorial and Production).
        • Conduct regular business review meetings to share results and gather needs for further research and analysis.
        • Model analyses grounded by driver based and activity level understanding.
        • Provide guidance, best practices, and training if necessary.
      • Project Planning and Analysis
        • Partner with internal clients and Business Analyst to perform cost benefit analysis, vendor due diligence and business case creation.
        • Create project expense tracking, reporting, and reconciliation if necessary.
      • Financial Programs Reporting
        • Take ownership and refine current monthly reporting on PLOS Publication Fee Assistance and Institutional Account programs.
        • Perform ad hoc analysis and research for the program if necessary.
      • Adaptive Insight System Administration
        • Perform monthly actuals uploads and reconciliation.
        • Cost center structure and COA maintenance.
        • Canned reports maintenance and creations.

Qualifications and Experience:

      • BA/BS required; advanced degree in Finance, Economics or other quantitative discipline is highly desired.
      • 6 + years of experience in FP&A. Must be able to look at matters holistically, and balance with the finer details.
      • Proven ability to analyze complex business processes, publishing and/or manufacturing/logistics experience desirable.
      • Strong quantitative background, especially in statistics and data visualization. Strong ad hoc modeling skills and building financial models that can scale with the growth of the organization.
      • Strong analytic and modeling skills, ability to learn different systems quickly.
      • Diverse exposure to different planning and forecasting approaches desirable, rolling forecast experience preferred.
      • Experienced in product costing and activity-based-costing a big plus.
      • Solid consultative background, not afraid to work with teams and executives, asks challenging questions and make innovative recommendations.
      • Advanced Excel skills a must, proficiency in Access and Salesforce desirable.
      • Adaptive Insight experience highly desirable.

Software Development Supervisor

We are looking for a talented and creative software development supervisor to join the PLOS development team in our San Francisco office. The ideal candidate will be a confident, organized self-starter with first-class programming, problem-solving, and mentoring skills. We use an Agile development and testing process, with software engineers, QA engineers, and product managers working together every day.

The Software Development Supervisor will lead an existing agile team from within. Working closely with the product owner and scrum master, the Software Development Supervisor will mentor software engineer direct reports, and help the agile team thrive. The Software Development Supervisor is expected to perform code reviews and commit code.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a high performance agile development team. Influence team policies, remove obstacles, resolve conflicts.
  • Coach and mentor staff, including regular 1:1 meetings, setting stretch goals, and providing regular feedback.
  • Contribute code to the team’s Java, Javascript, and Python projects. Conduct code reviews and ensure high code quality across the team.
  • Work with CTO to design career paths, identify professional growth opportunities for staff, and contribute to staff annual review process.
  • Work with CTO on team selection, as well as engineer interview and hiring process.
  • Work with CTO to define and document development group best practices and guidelines.
  • Work closely with the Product team on feature requirements, break down large projects into smaller components, and help estimate engineering tasks.
  • Review engineering process workflows for continuous integration and continuous deployments. Put efficiency improvements into action.
  • Interface with third-party developers, contractors, vendors and partners, and help to define requirements for integrations with external parties.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 2+ years experience leading software development projects or small teams.
  • 7+ years of software development experience with an emphasis in consumer web applications, content management systems or electronic publishing systems.
  • B.S. in Engineering or Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • Experience leading a small development team in a demanding, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience using Agile/Scrum methodologies for iterative software development.
  • Expert in Java application development with experience using tools like Spring, Maven, and Hibernate.
  • Experience using relational databases like mysql and postgres.
  • Strong understanding of software design patterns, service based architectures, and API design.
  • Experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment.
  • Familiarity with selecting and implementing Open Source technologies, and knowledge of how community driven software development works.

Systems Administrator (UK)

At PLOS, we are currently looking for a Systems Administrator to join our team within our Cambridge UK office.

The ideal candidate will be a confident and highly organized self-starter with first class communication and problem solving skills. Previous experience working in a fast paced environment is a must. The successful candidate will assist in the general day-to-day management of the Windows and Linux IT infrastructure, maintain the networking devices, monitor the organization’s IT environment and provide technical support for the PLOS staff (onsite and remote).

Responsibilities

  • Administer and maintain aspects of the organizational infrastructure including email, anti-spam and anti-virus, backup and recovery operations, log rotations, systems status, etc.
  • Implement approved infrastructure changes and perform ongoing maintenance of all systems components of the Windows infrastructure.
  • Configure, maintain and monitor networking devices, VPN and firewalls.
  • Provide assistance in supporting our Linux based production systems
  • Build and maintain test labs.
  • Provide technology discovery (research), installation and configuration information.
  • Evaluate, recommend and purchase software/tools/technology for the organization.
  • Act as the critical stakeholder on all Desktop Services projects.
  • Provide backup support for the Windows Systems Administrator. Assist in problem resolution when technical issues are escalated by the Windows Systems Administrator.
  • Provide the highest level of service to users.
  • Although not usually required, this role will be on call for emergencies 24×7.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree Educated
  • Previous experience as a Windows Systems Administrator or a similar role.
  • Experience with Juniper routers and switches, ASA firewalls, Wifi routers and network architectures is highly desired.
  • Linux systems administration experience
  • Juniper network certification (or equivalent training/experience) a plus.
  • Configuration, administration and troubleshooting of Windows Server 2003/2008, Active Directory 2007/2010 and Office 2010.
  • Solid understanding of DNS, IP subnets
  • Knowledge of Windows SUS and application of critical/security updates to both onsite and remote staff.
  • Knowledge of SharePoint 2007/2010/2013 a plus.
