OA Journal Publication Funds

Many of the world’s most prestigious research institutions have introduced policies that mandate or strongly encourage open access to the work of their scholars. Your institution may have a fund to pay for publication fees:

  1. Open Access Directory: Open Access Journal Funds – All the funds listed here are designed to pay publication fees at fee-based OA journals.
  2. Compact for OA Access Publishing Equity – Supports equity of the business models by committing each university to “the timely establishment of durable mechanisms for underwriting reasonable publication charges for articles written by its faculty and published in fee-based open-access journals and for which other institutions would not be expected to provide funds.”
  3. SPARC Publication Fund Listing – Download a PDF of this living document describing North American funds in action across a variety of characteristics, including fund size, sponsorship, requirements, and more.
  4. Wellcome Trust Open Access Finding -  There are two ways in which Wellcome Trust-funded authors can access additional funds to cover open access publishing costs.  Follow the link to see if you are eligible.

If your institution doesn’t have an OA Journal Publication Fund, you can ask your institution’s library to set one up. This document will assist you:  SPARC’s Guide to setting up an OA Publication Fund.
