Nicola was born in Ecuador and raised in Switzerland before heading to the UK to do an undergraduate Master’s degree in Biology at the University of Bath. After a brief interlude as a research assistant working on sweet taste receptors she then moved to the Babraham Institute in Cambridge to undertake her PhD in chromatin biology. During her time there she became interested in science writing and publishing. Prior to joining PLOS in 2013 she undertook an internship with the Journal of Experimental Biology writing and editing for their front section. When she’s not in the office, she can be often found baking and crafting, and on the odd occasion in the gym or at a Pilates class.
