Maggie Brown

Senior Production Editor

In previous lives Maggie (MS, ELS) has done research on parasitic diseases of humans and on bird ecology. The former resulted in, among other things, a lifelong wariness of raw foods. Some of the latter work became her MS thesis on social behavior and population genetics of Harlequin ducks (UC Davis, Ecology, 1998). For six years before being hired by PLoS she ran her own freelance copyediting business from her tiny home office on the coast of Maine. She is a staunch supporter of open-access publishing as a way to both facilitate research for scientists everywhere and allow the public greater access to scientific information. She is an avid gardener, is locally famous for her sourdough bread, and makes art from recycled subscription-only scientific journals and other found objects. Although she lives and works in Maine, she does not like lobster, which she says is “just a giant insect.”
