Senior Java Programmer

Do you want to play a role in changing the scientific publishing industry? Do you believe in Open Source Software and the Open Access movement? Do you want to work with exciting technologies like RDF, OWL, and the semantic web? Come work on PLoS Publishing Application, the exciting new software for online journals poised to change the industry. We are using the best of Web 2.0 technologies to revolutionize journal publication. We are located in China Basin in San Francisco across the street from the ballpark.

Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Java Programmer to implement exciting new functionality in the application.

The responsibilities of the Senior Java Programmer include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Assist in the architecture, design and development of distributed web applications
  • Assist with design and implementation of data models for new system functionality
  • Work with members of our platform team to enhance core product features and develop new ones

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum of 8 years of intensive development experience using JAVA
  • Experience building, deploying, and maintaining a consumer Web site
  • Excellent working knowledge of Struts 2, Spring, FreeMarker template (or something similar), XML, HTML/XHTML, CSS, JavaScript (basic understanding), XSLT
  • Highly motivated, strong software design and debugging skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Good communication skills

Nice to have

  • Semantic Technologies (RDF, OWL, etc.)
  • Maven, RPM packaging
  • Groovy
  • Prior experience with Content Management Systems
  • Active in an open source software project

Education

  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science or equivalent

Web Producer

The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is seeking a Web Producer to support the production of our award-winning online scientific journals and websites. This position requires extensive HTML, XHTML and CSS coding. You need sharp eyes for quality control and proofreading of content for the online journals, organization websites, and outgoing e-mail alerts and newsletters. You will work closely with other web producers on tasks and deliverables. You�ll work with an outstanding web team for a fun, creative, bleeding-edge scientific publishing non-profit.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain homepage and static content for websites using HTML, XHTML, and CSS markup
  • Conduct quality control and proofing of the journal content to ensure that the content is error free and published according to established guidelines
  • Interact with a vendor responsible for hosting the journal websites to ensure timely delivery of content, communicate website changes, and report and resolve issues
  • Create and update content and templates for current and new websites
  • Conduct cross-browser, cross-platform compatibility tests on templates and CSS updates
  • Assist with production of new online journals and websites in different stages of pre-launch, sneak preview, soft-launch, and launch
  • Use an e-mail application (PHPlist) to proof and send e-mail content alerts to registered readers

Qualifications

  • Hand-coding of HTML and XHTML; At least two years experience
  • Creating and modifying CSS (you should be able to make fully-structured web pages in table-less CSS)
  • Basic Photoshop skills
  • Experience working with a Content Management System
  • Ability to follow established process and attention to detail

This is a full-time, permanent position available immediately at our San Francisco office, and we are looking to fill it as soon as possible. Our salaries are competitive for nonprofit organizations, but less than comparable salaries in the corporate environments. Compensation is dependent on qualifications. PLoS offers a benefits package which includes vacation, 401(k), health, vision and dental coverage.

Production Operations Manager

Organization Overview

The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is headquartered in San Francisco and committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource. PLoS publishes peer-reviewed, open-access scientific and medical journals that include original research as well as feature articles. Everything PLoS publishes is freely available to be read, downloaded, copied, and distributed.

PLoS has a team of 60, comprising editors, scientists, technologists, and production staff. Our work environment is team-oriented and rich in innovative ideas. PLoS' distinguished board of directors is lead by a Nobel Prize winner in Medicine. In under four years, we have launched several prominent scientific journals of worldwide impact.

Job Summary

We are seeking a Production Operations Manager to work in an innovative team environment. Reporting to the Director, the Manager will bring operations expertise and best practices, "outside the box" solutions, project management and analytical skills and collaboration to ensure the highest quality standards are met while closely monitoring schedules, resources, and costs and maximizing workflow efficiencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Production Operations Director on key operational issues relating to workflow, schedules and procedures across all journals and their respective Web sites.
  • Collaborate with the Prod Ops team to identify opportunities to streamline processes, especially workflow between Editorial and Production Operations, and improve efficiencies while maintaining tight production schedules, cost effective procedures, and quality control across journals.
  • Maintain production logs to track Production Operations issues and review status weekly with the Production Ops Director and the broader production team.
  • Act as liaison with in-house production editors and Web producers to clearly and consistently communicate production objectives and game plans, and to understand resource needs and daily operational concerns and successes.
  • Act as liaison for the Prod Ops team with other departments (editorial, IT, etc.) to reinforce open communications in both directions.
  • Supervise, hire and help train new staff.
  • Serve as direct line of contact with publishing vendor regarding production related issues and questions. Coordinate with publishing vendor to ensure that production issues are resolved and all processes run smoothly and efficiently.
  • Work with the JMS (Journal Management System) Support Technician to ensure Production Operations is using and utilizing the JMS most efficiently. Initiate new reports. Communicate key JMS updates and information to the Prod Ops team.
  • Maintain and report monthly production metrics and analysis, including production capacities, backlogs, schedule delays, trends and other key benchmarks to the Director and the broader team.
  • Manage special production projects as needed. Facilitate the efforts of key players and project members to ensure project and operational success.
  • Act as back up for the Director of Production Operations.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to manage complex, high-priority projects, and monitor multiple projects and deadlines.
  • 5-7 years of Operations experience with 3-5 years in an online environment preferred.
  • Supervisory experience required; experience with hiring and working with colleagues in different geographic locations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strategic thinker. Excellent vendor management skills.
  • Bachelors Degree. Word processing and spreadsheet applications required. Some experience with xml and other coding. Adept at learning new software and systems.
  • Preferred: A working knowledge of technologies used in journals publishing, including manuscript tracking, online submission/review, electronic editing, and web hosting.
