PLOS (the Public Library of Science) is a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization located in San Francisco, CA, USA and Cambridge, UK Our mission is to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication. Everything that we publish is Open-Access – freely available online for anyone to use and we maximize the value of this resource through technology.

PLOS has a global team of more than 180 people working in our editorial, production, information technology, administration, marketing, communications, and advocacy teams. Associate Editor, PLOS ONE

We are currently looking for a talented Associate Editor to join the PLOS ONE editorial team in our Cambridge, UK office.  The Associate Editor, PLOS ONE will work with other editors to manage submissions to the journal. As such, the Associate Editor will be responsible for a wide array of editorial matters, from daily submission assessments to developing the overall scope of the journal.

This is a part-time role working 21 hours per week.  A schedule of three seven-hour days is preferred but there is some flexibility for the ideal candidate.

  • Assessing new submissions and guiding papers through the review process

Business Operations Analyst

We are currently looking for a talented Business Operations Analyst to join our Finance team within our San Francisco office.

Responsibilities

Business and Operations Analysis

  • Perform research and analysis to drive efficiency, identify risks and opportunities.
  • Partner with team members to perform, refine and maintain ongoing workflow analysis and projection.
  • Create KPIs and/or other key metrics to assist business partners on managing productivity, efficiency and costs.
  • Maintain and build new tools to translate and interpret how changes in business processes impact performance and costs.

Data Governance

  • Act as the Finance liaison to the system/data team.
  • Provide support and suggestions to improve data consistency and confidence.
  • Find solutions to data needs that are not addressed in existing reporting system, which may include creations of ad hoc databases.
  • Optimize Access databases currently used in Finance for operational analysis.

Other Analytical Support

  • Act as an independent and unbiased collaborator.  If necessary, conduct supplemental research and analysis to examine the soundness of project proposals, provide feedback and recommendations.
  • Project and/or marketing ROI evaluations

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor degree in Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics or other quantitative discipline required.
  • 5 to 7 years of experience in business/operations analysis.  Must be able to look at matters holistically, and balance with the finer details.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex/high-volume business processes, publishing operations experience desirable.

HR Administrator

We are looking for a highly organized and detail-oriented HR Administrator to join our human resources team supporting PLOS’s high-volume recruitment activity and other projects within our San Francisco office. Previous experience working in a fast paced environment is a must.

Responsibilities

Recruitment

  • Ensure a positive candidate experience through effective communication, attention to detail and a high degree of customer service.
  • Post job openings on internal/external sites and remove ads once a position is filled.
  • Schedule phone/on-site interviews, travel arrangements, create interview agendas and coordinate the distribution of all appropriate documents prior to interviews. When changes occur, will confirm interview dates and details with candidates.
  • Be the main point of contact for candidates coming in for on-site interviews (greet candidates and be able to react/correct interview transitions as changes arise). Collect required forms and manage the background screening process.
  • Send out offer letters and new hire packets to candidates.

Staff Support

  • Send out employee action notices to HR and other internal departments as needed.
  • Conduct the weekly New Hire Orientation to inform staff members of company policies and health and welfare benefit options.
  • Conduct employee Exit Interviews summarizing employee feedback for hiring manager and HR.
  • Serve as payroll backup and benefits administration support when absences arise

Training and Development

  • Support the HR team in the operational logistics of on site or remote learning for staff. Will administer the Volunteer Time Off and Global Orientation programs.
  • Send out post training surveys to collect employee feedback on programs.
  • Responsible for the technology setup and administration of training programs through GoTo Meeting.

General

  • Responsible for creating new employee personnel folders and for filing employee related documents.
  • Document processes and procedures relating to HR Generalist and other HR processes.
  • Assist with other HR tasks/projects as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

  • 3+ years of prior Human Resources administration experience in a professional office environment. Previous recruitment coordination experience is a must.
  • Experienced with the Microsoft suite (Office 2010, Office 360 version), specifically MS Word and MS Outlook; and familiarity with Word Press is desired.
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of hiring managers and the HR team is essential.
  • Detail-oriented, organized and flexible; able to multi-task and change gears quickly/effectively. Capable at prioritizing candidate/recruitment related tasks and communications with general direction.

Program Coordinator, Training

The Training Program Coordinator supports the development and implementation of a publications staff training program under the guidance of the Documentation & Training Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Training planning and coordination
    • Coordinate and organize the scheduling, enrolling, and logistics of training workshops, skill-building lunch conferences, and project-process-related training of staff (e.g., when editorial/production processes are implemented or changed).
    • Schedule training sessions and coordinate with participants
    • Prepare materials for training sessions (e.g., handouts, certificates, collaboration tools, refreshments)
    • Conduct pre- and post-training assessments
    • Collect and monitor training metrics
    • Respond to queries in the training inbox
  • Curriculum development
    • Identify and refine core cross-journal training competencies

Senior Editor, Medicine

We are currently looking for an experienced Senior Editor to join our team in either our San Francisco or Cambridge, UK offices.

As an integral member of the editorial team running an open-access international medical journal, the post-holder will be responsible for assessing research manuscripts, handling peer reviews, commissioning articles and contributing to other parts of the journal – as well as to PLOS as a whole.

Responsibilities:

  • Handling a proportion of research manuscripts submitted to the journal from submission through peer review and publication, including presenting manuscripts to editorial team, interacting with reviewers and academic editors around manuscript assessment and review, and clearly communicating decisions to authors.
  • Being involved with editorial writing, press releases, editors’ summaries and other related materials
  • Participating in the daily running of the journal, including non-research content

Senior Project Manager/Scrum Master

Senior Research Editor

PLOS Medicine the flagship open-access general medical journal is seeking an experienced Senior Research Editor to join the team that runs the journal.

This is a senior position, in which the successful applicant will be expected to provide leadership for the research section of the journal. The position is full time and could be based in either of our editorial offices in San Francisco, USA or Cambridge, UK.

Responsibilities

  • Oversight of research manuscript processes and policy, including initial triage of manuscripts, chairing of research manuscript meetings, development and implementation of journal policy in the research section, and coordination with non-research content
  • Handling a proportion of the Research manuscripts submitted
  • Providing mentoring and consultation on manuscript assessment and handling for staff and freelance editors

WordPress Designer/Developer Consultant

Starting immediately, we are looking for a Senior WordPress Contract Developer to work on-site in our San Francisco office for a project with a short timeline of about 1 month. Following design mockups, the developer will work closely with in-house UX and Developers to create a new blog site on our existing blogs network. The project involves creating a new WordPress theme and templating; sourcing, installing, and configuring several plug-ins; reconfiguring the navigational header of the entire multi-site to accommodate the new blog site; testing the changes across the entire blogs network site, and fixing any issues that arise in QA prior to release.

Required experience: Must be very proficient with CSS3, HTML5, Javascript, PHP. Experience working with WordPress multi-sites, developing WordPress themes, and customizing plugins. Understanding of design, UI, and UX concepts and being able to translate these concepts to technical implementations.
