PLOS (the Public Library of Science) is a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization located in San Francisco, CA, USA and Cambridge, UK Our mission is to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication. Everything that we publish is Open-Access – freely available online for anyone to use and we maximize the value of this resource through technology.

PLOS has a global team of more than 180 people working in our editorial, production, information technology, administration, marketing, communications, and advocacy teams. Our work environment is team-oriented and rich in innovative ideas. PLOS’s distinguished Board of Directors includes eminent scientists, business leaders, and entrepreneurs.

In just ten years, PLOS has established seven highly successful journals that publish original content, an influential blog network, and a number of other initiatives to improve the organization and assessment of content for the benefit of different communities.

Advocacy and Marketing Communications Administrative Assistant

The ideal candidate will be a highly organized self-starter with first class communication and problem solving skills. Must be a quick learner to succeed in PLOS’ fast-paced, high volume Advocacy and Marketing environment. Previous experience in project management required.

The successful candidate will be a full-time member of PLOS’ Marketing team with split responsibilities within the Advocacy group.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and report on expenditure of the Advocacy and Marketing Communication groups.
  • Manage preparation of purchase orders, invoices and consultancy contracts.
  • Track progress of projects to ensure deadlines are met and all processes are followed
  • Assist in administrative arrangements including meeting scheduling, note taking, record keeping and making travel arrangements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Advocacy

  • Manage incoming speaking requests and calendar of engagements. Includes but is not limited to, maintaining a list of speakers, expertise and record of engagements. Collating material, recordings, and reports of PLOS speakers. Supporting speakers in making travel arrangements where appropriate.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 2 years of previous experience in and Marketing or Advocacy support role
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Outlook
  • Excellent computer skills; previous experience with all Microsoft applications
  • Able to self-manage and perform functions of role with minimal input
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on a variety of tasks

Associate Editor, PLOS ONE (Temporary)

We are currently looking for a talented Associate Editor to join the editorial team of PLOS based in either its San Francisco or Cambridge, UK office.

This post was created for a maternity cover period of approximately 9 months. The Associate Editor, PLOS ONE will work with other editors to manage the rapidly increasing volume of submissions to the journal. As such, the Associate Editor will be responsible for a wide array of editorial matters, from daily submission assessments to developing the overall scope of the journal.

Documentation and Training Coordinator (Temporary)

The Public Library of Science (PLOS) is a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization with a mission to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication. We are currently looking for a talented Documentation and Training Coordinator to join our rapidly growing Education and Contributor Support team for a temporary role of up to one year in our San Francisco office. The ideal candidate will be a confident, highly organized self-starter with first class organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

The Documentation and Training Coordinator provides support to organizational projects related to training, documentation, and communications across all seven PLOS journals. The Documentation and Training Coordinator  will also be responsible for coordinating training and documentation materials, ensuring that they are up-to-date and made available to staff and PLOS constituents as needed.

Responsibilities:

Documentation

  • Create documentation for internal and external audiences
  • Develop documentation templates and provide training in best practices
  • Maintain documentation library
  • Conduct documentation audits and liaise with internal documentation owners and outsource vendors as needed
  • Provide assistance to internal staff with documentation tools (investigate and test software and platforms, develop tips and tricks, troubleshoot bugs, address queries)

Training

  • Coordinate and optimize staff training materials and processes across  PLOS journals, Contribute to development of educational materials for authors, editors, and reviewers
  • Provide assistance to internal staff with training tools and technology (webinars, software, e-learning platforms, screencasts)

Communications

  • Coordinate updates to public-facing content liaising with stakeholders and vendors
  • Develop strategies for auditing public-facing communication and maintaining accurate records of content
  • Align communication updates with optimization of internal documentation and training

Qualifications and Experience:

  • BA or BS degree required. Two years of accredited training or equivalent experience in Publishing, Education, Communications, Instructional Design, Library & Information Science, Technical Writing, or related field.
  • Experience writing and creating publications and graphics.
  • Experience in web-based and in-person training design and implementation.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and oral presentation skills. Some experience in visual communication and/or data visualization.
  • Proficiency with Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and Publisher.  Experience with graphics, multimedia, and educational technology platforms preferred.

Executive Editor

The Public Library of Science (PLOS) has an immediate opening for the new position of Executive Editor for the seven PLOS peer-reviewed open-access journals, publishing an anticipated 35,000 articles in 2013. PLOS seeks an individual who has served as a senior academic researcher and who has significant leadership experience in scientific publishing.

The Executive Editor will have overall responsibility for the editorial direction and vision of the PLOS journals, and serve as a member of the PLOS leadership team, helping to set broader organizational strategy and goals, and delivering on the PLOS mission to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication.

Responsibilities:

As a member of the PLOS Executive team, the Executive Editor reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and has overall management responsibility for an experienced group of highly motivated and collaborative Editorial Directors for PLOS ONE, PLOS Biology, PLOS Medicine, PLOS’ four community journals and their teams.

The successful candidate will be a true science visionary and innovator who will provide leadership in creating scientific communication of the future as well as developing policies and programs around the handling of research data.

The Executive Editor will ensure that the PLOS publishing portfolio is coordinated, high-quality and furthers the goals of PLOS through the following responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Work with PLOS leadership team and Board to help establish overarching strategy and goals for the organization
  • Establish and execute editorial vision and practices

Editorial Oversight

  • Lead journal editorial programs and policies

Linux Systems Administrator

We are currently seeking a Linux Systems Administrator to join our IT Services team within our rapidly growing San Francisco office.

The ideal candidate will be a confident and highly organized self-starter with first class communication and problem solving skills. Previous experience working in a fast paced environment is a must. The successful candidate will partner with our in-house Software Services team to assist them in the deployment of the applications for the PLOS Publishing system projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with software developers to plan for, document and execute the deployment of applications for the PLOS publishing system. This includes but is not limited to: Tomcat, Nginx, Apache, MySQL, MVC Java web apps (Struts, Spring MVC), SOLR, Active MQ, CouchDB, Rails and Drupal.
  • Build and manage development, test, demo and performance environments located on local workstations, private-clouds and Amazon AWS.
  • Build tools to deploy features and releases effortlessly to multiple environments, including the production servers.
  • Ensure that these environments have the latest releases and current data.
  • Maintain, monitor and improve the automated build system.
  • Work with the development team to triage issues in multiple environments.
  • Provide technical support for application and environment configuration issues.
  • Act as back-up Linux systems administrator for the production infrastructure.
  • Although not usually required, you will be on call for system outages 24×7.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of experience as a Linux Systems Administration.
  • Deep understanding of Red Hat/CentOS or Ubuntu.
  • Highly proficient with Red Hat KVM, Kickstart and CFengine.
  • Solid experience with distributed filestores such as MogileFS.
  • Knowledge of deployment tools like Chef, Puppet, and/or Ansible.
  • Knowledge of continuous integration tools like TeamCity, Jenkins or Bamboo.

Marketing Copy Writer/Editor

We are currently looking for an experienced and talented senior level Marketing Copy/Writer Editor to help communicate about PLOS products, policies and strategies in a concise businesslike, powerful and persuasive manner. PLOS operates in a highly technical industry, and yet PLOS needs to talk about its work in accessible and engaging ways. The successful candidate will be a senior member of our Marketing team within our rapidly growing San Francisco office.

It will be your role to draw out the stories PLOS should be sharing from editorial, product and marketing staff, and then help articulate those ideas into strong written stories with propositions for a variety of stakeholders from Government to individual researchers. An important aspect of this role will be interacting with c-suite level Executives to assist them in crafting the PLOS story; therefore you will need to be able to adapt your writing to suit various media, including brochures, emails, policy statements, keynote presentations, press releases and websites.

In addition to writing copy directly, you will also refine the work of others by copyediting, and managing the overall written expression of the PLOS brand – ensuring consistency of messaging and tone. The successful candidate will act as an internal ambassador: inspiring, training and guiding other writers within PLOS to higher standards of clear, businesslike and persuasive writing.

Note: Candidates invited to interview onsite will be asked to submit writing samples and will be required to take an impromptu writing and copyediting test on a random group of science and business related subjects as part of the interview process.

Responsibilities:

  • Owner of the messaging platform and managing the overall written identity and messaging document for PLOS, ensuring consistency of message and tone.
  • Defining positioning statements, value propositions and key messages in consultation with other PLOS staff and using exemplar pieces.
  • Writing clear, businesslike, persuasive, strategic writing for c-suite level executives – both from new materials and also refining the work of others to strengthen the proposition and simplify the language used.
  • Proofreading copy to check spelling and grammar including c-suite materials.
  • Providing internal training and guidance to other PLOS staff relating to writing persuasive copy including the development of a writer style guide.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of PLOS messaging strategies and written communications.
  • Creating and updating personas for key stakeholder groups and training other PLOS staff with writing responsibilities for their own use and application.
  • Liaising with PLOS editorial, marketing, advocacy and product staff to interpret their materials and conversations from an investigative journalism perspective.
  • Familiarising yourself with PLOS products and services, target audiences and competitors’ activities.
  • Amending, revising or redeveloping your own work (or that of others) in response to feedback.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 7+ years professional marketing copywriting experience in a variety of media with a businesslike, persuasive and engaging style. Previous experience writing for c-suite level, highly analytical and educated audiences is required.
  • Must be exceptionally detailed oriented and proficient in spelling, grammar, copywriting and editing skills.
  • Comfort working around c-suite level executives and giving concise business oriented feedback is essential.
  • Background as a reporter/interviewer or previous marketing agency experience is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills under time pressure; consistently able to meet the demands of many ongoing deadlines. Proven project management skills.

Publications Assistant

Key tasks include providing a professional service to authors and reviewers, assisting them with the submission system and supporting the professional editors working for the journal. Applicants should have good IT skills and experience with online systems or databases would be an advantage.

Responsibilities:

  • Operating our online submission system to facilitate the peer review process for the journal
  • Assisting authors, reviewers, and academic editors by answering queries by email and phone
  • Supporting the in-house Editors and Editorial and Publications Managers in their tasks
  • Fielding questions from scientists, members of the public and the press about the journal
  • Liaising with authors to ready manuscripts for acceptance and production by the journal
  • Engaging with press processes and social media

Quality Assurance Engineer- Python, Ruby, or Java (Multiple Vacancies)

PLOS is using the best of web technologies to revolutionize scientific publication. We are looking for a talented and creative QA Engineer to join the PLOS development team in our San Francisco office. You’ll join a growing team of QA Engineers in helping us evolve our testing frameworks, methodologies, and priorities. We use an Agile development and testing process. The QA Engineers are part of the agile development teams and involved in the entire software development lifecycle.

Responsibilities:

  • Extensively learn the PLOS products and journal websites.
  • Execute full QC lifecycles for software product releases.
  • Write and perform tests, manual and automated, feature, regression and load tests.
  • Report on test results, file and track bug reports, and assist software engineers in isolating and reproducing bugs.
  • Encourage exploratory testing and a culture of quality.
  • Participate in software releases.
  • Collaborate closely with developers, product managers and others to correctly identify, prioritize and resolve issues.

Qualifications and Experience:

Senior Editor/ Associate Editor, PLOS Medicine (Temporary)

We are currently looking for a talented Associate Editor or experienced Senior Editor to join our team in a temporary role due to last up to one year in our San Francisco, US or Cambridge, UK offices.

As an integral member of the editorial team running an open-access international medical journal, the post-holder will be responsible for assessing research manuscripts, handling peer reviews, commissioning articles and contributing to other parts of the journal – as well as to PLOS as a whole.

Responsibilities:

  • Handling a proportion of research manuscripts submitted to the journal
  • Being involved with editorial writing, press releases, editors’ summaries and other related materials
  • Participating in the daily running of the journal, including the Magazine section
  • Being involved in the advocacy activities of PLOS Medicine and PLOS

Qualifications and Experience

For either level:

  • MD or equivalent medical degree or PhD in a relevant biomedical field

Senior Editorial Manager

Ready for a challenging position working in a fast paced dynamic environment? PLOS is looking to fill a key management position within its Publishing Services team. The PLOS ONE Senior Editorial Manager (SEM) provides direct oversight of a 25-person team and the editorial operations for the largest peer-reviewed journal in the world. The SEM and his/her staff work closely with the team of internal editors, external editorial board members, and external editorial vendors to shepherd an average of more than 150 manuscript submissions per day through the review process.

Responsibilities:

Operations: Oversee the end-to-end manuscript administration of PLOS ONE including making decisions on the most efficient operational processes to support the peer review and editorial selection tasks, as well as planning and status checking the implementation of those processes.

Process Improvement: Perform ongoing assessment of operational processes; identify areas for improvement in terms of efficiency, speed, quality, and customer service.  Monitor and report on operational Key Performance Indicators and work to optimize and improve them.

Vendor Management: Screen, appoint, and manage outsource vendor relationships; develop and set targets, negotiate contracts, and approve invoices.

Staff Management: Supervise three management-level direct reports, providing coaching, development, and mentoring.  Provide active direction and leadership for the entire ONE team.

Outreach: Develop the journal’s reach through oversight of press program, blog postings, and use of article level metrics and other measures of success.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 10+ years of progressively responsible publishing experience of which 5 years have been spent in a managerial capacity; management of large teams a plus
  • Direct experience with editorial, manuscript management, peer review, and production systems in a high-level, multi-journal environment is a major plus
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and implement creative solutions, including process improvements to gain efficiencies; organizational structure changes and updated journal policies

Senior Marketing Program Manager

We are currently looking for an experienced and talented Senior Marketing Program Manager to join our Marketing team within our San Francisco office.

The Senior Marketing Program Manager will be responsible for defining, managing and executing strategic marketing and communication programs across the overall PLOS brand. The successful candidate will also be responsible for developing communication plans and projects with clear, business like, persuasive and strategic content – both from new work and also refining information from others.

Responsibilities:

Program Management/Product Launch

  • Lead the marketing efforts for the full cycle product or program launch, such as the PLOS Publication Fee Assistance Program; act as the marketing lead for the market readiness of identified strategic programs or product launches.
  • Oversee and complete all marketing program content strategy, tasks and deliverables to ensure on-time delivery and quality of content.
  • Develop goal-oriented marketing campaigns that capitalize on market opportunities, which may include the following tools: collateral, direct marketing, email marketing, events, seminars, webinars, landing pages, sponsorship and digital marketing.
  • Drive overall PLOS organization projects such as the progress update, media kit, collateral and PLOS.org website.
  • Partner with various departments and teams including: product, finance, publishing and editorial leaders to develop and implement the  marketing campaign strategy, deliverables, project plan and roles/responsibilities

Marketing Communication

  • Responsible for developing the overall PLOS communication strategy and plan including the messaging strategy, writing workshop, program positioning and related materials.
  • Identify the needs of internal/external customers and create audience profiles, tools and materials to ensure consistent organization wide messaging.
  • Lead and create the PLOS communication plan in partnership with colleagues.

Process Improvements

  • Leads, monitors and implements best-in-class standards for the marketing function through contributions to continuous improvements of programs, processes and tools promoting lean and efficient operating practices.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to create digital targeting strategies and models to drive more effective marketing programs and identify new target populations.

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Familiar using a variety of technologies like Spring, Hibernate, and REST.
  • Experience with Camel/Active MQ, Solr, and Python is a plus.
  • Experience in building a high-volume, highly available, distributed web application in a hosted environment.
  • Experience in working with SQL and/or NoSQL databases.
  • Strong OO design skills and an understanding of design patterns.

  • Ability to work well both in a team and individually.

User Experience Designer/Researcher

We are currently looking for a full-time User Experience Designer to join PLOS Labs in our headquarters in San Francisco. PLOS Labs is a small innovation group empowered to build and test software prototypes, create and push forward disruptive innovation in publishing tools and evaluation, collect data and make recommendations about future scientific publishing product to further the mission of PLOS.

You will be a key member of the PLOS Labs team and report directly to the Director. You will also support other PLOS staff on Labs project teams, contribute to the development of best practices at PLOS and help ensure that UX and design thinking stay at the heart of our development process.

This role would suit someone who is looking to directly shape the future of software tools and services used to make scientific publishing and communication more effective and efficient. It is critical that you have a passion for teaching and learning to fit into the culture at PLOS. This position may suit an experienced researcher/designer who is looking for a new role focused on science, publishing, and open culture.  This position is full time and located in San Francisco. Some local travel and very occasional national travel may be required.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the shaping user experience of all product prototypes from PLOS Labs
  • Working with the Director of PLOS Labs, determine and use the best design research methods to discover and document needs of our audience
  • Create wireframes, user scenarios, site maps, statemaps and web/mobile site graphics as needed
  • Develop personas based on research and user scenarios
  • Collaborate within a small cross-functional team on prototype development
  • Oversee software development project deliverables, in consultation with developers and other Labs researchers, ensuring the software prototypes deliver the designed usability and features
  • Conduct user testing of new products, analyze results and report in a compelling, actionable way
  • Coordinate with PLOS staff and outside consultants to manage experience testing
  • Educate internal teams and PLOS staff on best practices around experience design and usability testing

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree in design research, HCI, or related discipline
  • Five years of experience in Design Research and/or UX Design
  • An active interest in science, open access publishing and open culture
  • Comfortable communicating your ideas on a whiteboard, in Adobe CS or Omnigraffle
  • Self-starter who can make decisions independently but also collaborate well on a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

Nice To Have:

  • Familiarity coding with CSS, HTML5, Javascript, Ajax; bonus if you prototype your own work
  • Experience working in with agile development teams
  • You know how to use Pivotal Tracker
  • Experience in academic/university research environments or scientific labs desirable
