Associate Editor, PLOS ONE

We are currently looking for a talented Associate Editor to join the PLOS ONE editorial team in our Cambridge, UK office.  The Associate Editor, PLOS ONE will work with other editors to manage submissions to the journal. As such, the Associate Editor will be responsible for a wide array of editorial matters, from daily submission assessments to developing the overall scope of the journal.

This is a part-time role working 21 hours per week.  A schedule of three seven-hour days is preferred but there is some flexibility for the ideal candidate.

Business Operations Analyst

We are currently looking for a talented Business Operations Analyst to join our Finance team within our San Francisco office.

Business and Operations Analysis

  • Perform research and analysis to drive efficiency, identify risks and opportunities.
  • Partner with team members to perform, refine and maintain ongoing workflow analysis and projection.
  • Create KPIs and/or other key metrics to assist business partners on managing productivity, efficiency and costs.
  • Maintain and build new tools to translate and interpret how changes in business processes impact performance and costs.

Data Governance

  • Act as the Finance liaison to the system/data team.
  • Provide support and suggestions to improve data consistency and confidence.
  • Find solutions to data needs that are not addressed in existing reporting system, which may include creations of ad hoc databases.
  • Optimize Access databases currently used in Finance for operational analysis.

Other Analytical Support

  • Act as an independent and unbiased collaborator.  If necessary, conduct supplemental research and analysis to examine the soundness of project proposals, provide feedback and recommendations.
  • Project and/or marketing ROI evaluations

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor degree in Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics or other quantitative discipline required.
  • 5 to 7 years of experience in business/operations analysis.  Must be able to look at matters holistically, and balance with the finer details.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex/high-volume business processes, publishing operations experience desirable.

Executive Editor

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Executive Editor has overall responsibility for the editorial and content direction and vision of PLOS journals and has overall management responsibility for an experienced group of highly motivated and collaborative senior editorial staff for all PLOS titles and editorial outputs. The Executive Editor will be a key leader of PLOS continued innovation to enable transparent, collaborative and barrier-free scientific communication.

As a member of PLOS’ Executive Team, the Executive Editor contributes to leadership of the organization and actively participates and collaborates with senior leadership across all departments to establish both short and long term strategic plans and objectives to support organizational mission and priorities.



  • Work with PLOS leadership team and Board to establish overarching strategy and goals for the organization
  • Establish and execute editorial vision and strategy
  • Create and direct content strategies for all seven journals, collections and other new content products
  • Lead journal editorial programs and policies
  • Represent PLOS journals externally to the science, publishing, legislative and field specific communities and contribute to the development of policy positions and recommendations

Editorial Oversight

  • Work with PLOS senior editorial team and community journal Editors in Chief (EiC’s) to set programmatic, cross-journal and journal-specific strategies, policies and best practices
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure continued success of the overall publishing program
  • Represent editorial interests to the Board of Directors and Executive Team
  • Oversee editorial program activities including monitoring editorial metrics, produce regular editorial reports and troubleshoot editorial issues with the team as they arise
  • Drive and maintain highest quality ethics program in line with COPE guidelines
  • Overall management of editorial budgets including resource allocation and priorities, managing in-sourced and out-sourced editorial efforts

  • Direct line management of senior editorial staff for PLOS ONE, PLOS Biology, PLOS Medicine and PLOS’ four community journals

Location and Travel

Qualifications and Experience

  • 12+ years of progressively responsible editorial leadership roles in STM journal publishing with a minimum of 6 years in a leadership capacity

Office and Facilities Manager

We are currently looking for a talented Office and Facilities Manager to join our Administration team within our San Francisco office.

Publications Assistant

We have a vacancy for a Publications Assistant in our San Francisco office to join the Publishing Services team.

Key tasks include providing a professional service to authors and reviewers, assisting them with the submission system and supporting the editors working for the journal. Applicants should have good IT skills and experience with online systems or databases would be an advantage.

QA Engineer Consultant

We are currently looking for two talented and creative QA Engineer Consultants to join the PLOS development team in our San Francisco office for a period of 12 months.

This role is a full-time consulting opportunity through December 2015 to support important organization initiatives. The QA Engineer Consultant will join two other QA Engineers, write and maintain automated tests, participate in the release process, and do manual testing when necessary. We use an Agile Scrum development and testing process. The QA Engineers are part of the development scrum team and involved in the entire software development lifecycle.


  • Execute full QC lifecycles for software product releases.
  • Write and perform tests, manual and automated, feature and regression and performance tests.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and development of a Python-based, Selenium Webdriver/Selenium Grid test framework.
  • Encourage exploratory testing and a culture of quality.
  • Participate in software releases.
  • Collaborate closely with developers, product managers and others to correctly identify, prioritize and resolve issues.
  • Report on test results, file and track bug reports, and assist software engineers in isolating and reproducing bugs.

Senior Editor, Medicine

We are currently looking for an experienced Senior Editor to join our team in either our San Francisco or Cambridge, UK offices.

As an integral member of the editorial team running an open-access international medical journal, the post-holder will be responsible for assessing research manuscripts, handling peer reviews, commissioning articles and contributing to other parts of the journal – as well as to PLOS as a whole.


  • Handling a proportion of research manuscripts submitted to the journal from submission through peer review and publication, including presenting manuscripts to editorial team, interacting with reviewers and academic editors around manuscript assessment and review, and clearly communicating decisions to authors.

Staff Accountant

We are looking for a talented and analytical individual to join our team within our San Francisco office in the role of Staff Accountant.

The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of pertinent GAAP, be responsible for day-day accounting activities, handle critical areas of the monthly close and will thrive in a fast paced environment requiring multi-tasking and attention to detail, and has the ability to handle a high volume of transactions. This position will report to the Controller. The position provides strong full cycle accounting exposure for professional development and growth. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:


  • Perform monthly reconciliations of bank and balance sheet accounts. Maintain Reconciliation review workbook.
  • Oversee Fixed Asset capitalization and depreciation, including reconciliation to GL and IT’s Ephor tracking system.
  • Review General Ledger and assist with financial statement preparation and customization.
  • Manage day-to-day activities including assisting with weekly payment processing.
  • Oversee grant management and compliance along with associated GAAP nonprofit accounting.
  • Assist in preparing various local, state, federal and foreign filings for regulatory compliance (e.g. annual 1099s, 990 and 990T tax filing)
  • Assist with annual audit preparation, including preparing reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Maintain accounting system including system backup, budget uploads and system integration initiatives.
  • Assist in maintaining policy and procedure changes. Identify opportunities for process improvements or automation.
  • Special projects or Finance Programs as assigned by Controller or the Director of Finance.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelors in Accounting or Finance with minimum of 4 years of professional experience. Experience in audit with public accounting a plus. Persons with their CPA or those who are a current CPA candidate are desired.
  • Strong understanding of accounting theory, GAAP and ability to conduct technical accounting and tax research a plus.
  • Experience with querying data to produce analysis to answer research and business questions.
  • Hands-on experience using mid-size ERP Windows-based or SaaS financial system software (Microsoft Dynamics Navision, a plus) Experience with SQL a plus. Strong computer desktop skills required.
