PLOS (the Public Library of Science) is a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization located in San Francisco, CA, USA and Cambridge, UK Our mission is to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication. Everything that we publish is Open-Access – freely available online for anyone to use and we maximize the value of this resource through technology.

PLOS has a global team of more than 180 people working in our editorial, production, information technology, administration, marketing, communications, and advocacy teams. Our work environment is team-oriented and rich in innovative ideas. PLOS’s distinguished Board of Directors includes eminent scientists, business leaders, and entrepreneurs.

In just ten years, PLOS has established seven highly successful journals that publish original content, an influential blog network, and a number of other initiatives to improve the organization and assessment of content for the benefit of different communities.

Front-End Software Engineer

PLOS is using the best of web technologies to revolutionize scientific publication. We are looking for a talented and creative front-end engineer to join the PLOS development team in our San Francisco office. You will create user interfaces that are used by over 5 million people that visit the PLOS journals every month. You’ll be working within a small, cross-functional team that includes both researchers and designers in addition to working with other staff from PLOS and outside consultants and advisors.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Product and Development teams to bring wire-frames and mock-ups to life using HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript.
  • Work in an agile environment.
  • Create clean, functional, and extensible cross browser code.
  • Collaborate on the design and implementation of new features.
  • Research and adapt new technologies quickly in a dynamic work environment.
  • Work with the Product team to define new features and create technical requirements.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 3 – 5 years of experience developing web pages for commercial web sites.
  • Expert knowledge of JavaScript.
  • Experience working with JavaScript libraries like jQuery, backbone.js, Google Charts, d3.js, etc.
  • Proficiency with Photoshop, GIMP, or related tools.
  • Mobile web development experience a plus.
  • Experience with Google Analytics a plus.
  • Extensive understanding of HTML5, CSS, Ajax, JSON
  • Experience in building a high-volume, highly available, distributed web application in a hosted environment.

PLOS ONE Freelance Editors

We are looking for consultants with editorial expertise who can provide freelance support to our PLOS ONE editorial team.

The ideal candidates will be confident and highly organized self-starters with first class communication and problem solving skills. Previous experience working in a fast paced environment is a must.

Services provided by consultants will include the assessment of submissions to the journal, involvement in the oversight of the processing of submissions through the peer review process and collaboration with the journal editors and the editorial board.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proven experience in STM journals publishing and editorial roles, as well as a good understanding of online scientific communication.
  • Applicants with clinical experience or wide medical knowledge would be particularly welcome.
  • Skill in critically evaluating medical/scientific research manuscripts.
  • Able to prioritize and work efficiently to deadlines in the context of ongoing submissions and a wide array of editorial matters. Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • This is freelance work for a temporary period. Freelancers are not employed by the Public Library of Science and are expected to work remotely.

Program Coordinator, Training

The Training Program Coordinator supports the development and implementation of a publications staff training program under the guidance of the Documentation & Training Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Training planning and coordination
    • Coordinate and organize the scheduling, enrolling, and logistics of training workshops, skill-building lunch conferences, and project-process-related training of staff (e.g., when editorial/production processes are implemented or changed).
    • Schedule training sessions and coordinate with participants
    • Prepare materials for training sessions (e.g., handouts, certificates, collaboration tools, refreshments)
    • Conduct pre- and post-training assessments
    • Collect and monitor training metrics
    • Respond to queries in the training inbox
  • Curriculum development
    • Identify and refine core cross-journal training competencies
    • Develop learning modules to deliver training on core competencies
    • Assist journal teams in incorporating learning modules into existing employee onboarding and professional development activities
    • Identify opportunities to sync core competencies across audiences (e.g., staff, authors, Academic Editors, vendors)
  • Training development and delivery
    • Create screencasts and develop other tools for multimedia and interactive training for internal and external users
    • Lead basic orientations/training sessions
    • Strategize and implement the reuse of existing instructional materials that were originally intended for one audience but can and should be adapted for us by other contributors.
  • Research & development
    • Conduct research on training tools, technology, and methodologies and make recommendations for adoption
    • Stay up-to-date on current industry best practices for employee training and development
  • Maintenance of training resources
    • Maintain training records and training calendars
    • Maintain library of training resources
  • Editorial Board support
    • Support the Editorial Board Management group by moderating discussion forum in PLOS ONE AE Knowledge Base and support additional training activities for editors across all the journals.
    • Coordinate training webinars/workshops for SIX editors
  • Technical support
    • Provide assistance with training tools and technology (e.g., setting up webinars, troubleshooting screencast software, administering learning management systems)

Qualifications and Experience

  • A university degree or equivalent is preferred

Publications Assistant (UK)

PLOS is a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization with a mission to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication.

We have a vacancy for a Publications Assistant in our Cambridge, UK office to join the Publishing Services team.

Key tasks include providing a professional service to authors and reviewers, assisting them with the submission system and supporting the editors working for the journal. Applicants should have good IT skills and experience with online systems or databases would be an advantage.

The ideal candidate will be a confident and highly organized self-starter with first class communication and problem solving skills. Previous experience working in a fast paced environment is valuable. The successful candidate will be a team player, organized and conscientious with good attention to detail and the ability to manage their own workload and meet competing deadlines. Evidence of experience or interest in science, science publishing, and/or open access is advantageous.

Responsibilities:

  • Operating our online submission system to facilitate the peer review process for the journal
  • Assisting authors, reviewers, and academic editors by answering queries by email and phone
  • Supporting the in-house Editors and Editorial and Publications Managers in their tasks
  • Fielding questions from scientists, members of the public and the press about the journal
  • Liaising with authors to ready manuscripts for acceptance and production by the journal
  • Engaging with press processes and social media
  • Assisting with the gathering of statistical data for the journals (as required)
  • Maintaining and updating journal operation process workflows as directed
  • Troubleshooting routine manuscript issues, providing input on manuscript discussions and escalating issues when appropriate

Senior Editor, Medicine

We are currently looking for an experienced Senior Editor to join our team in either our San Francisco or Cambridge, UK offices.

As an integral member of the editorial team running an open-access international medical journal, the post-holder will be responsible for assessing research manuscripts, handling peer reviews, commissioning articles and contributing to other parts of the journal – as well as to PLOS as a whole.

Responsibilities:

  • Handling a proportion of research manuscripts submitted to the journal from submission through peer review and publication, including presenting manuscripts to editorial team, interacting with reviewers and academic editors around manuscript assessment and review, and clearly communicating decisions to authors.
  • Being involved with editorial writing, press releases, editors’ summaries and other related materials
  • Participating in the daily running of the journal, including non-research content
  • Being involved in the advocacy activities of PLOS Medicine and PLOS

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Advanced (MD, PhD, or equivalent) Degree is required.
    • Strongly Preferred: MD or equivalent medical degree with residency training preferred (MRCP or equivalent in UK / Board-certified or board-eligible in US).
    • May be considered: PhD with postdoctoral or equivalent research experience in a relevant biomedical field.

Senior Research Editor

PLOS Medicine the flagship open-access general medical journal is seeking an experienced editor to join the team that runs the journal.

This is a senior position, in which the successful applicant will be expected to provide leadership for the research section of the journal. The position is full time and could be based in either of our editorial offices in San Francisco, USA or Cambridge, UK.

Responsibilities

  • Oversight of research manuscript processes and policy, including initial triage of manuscripts, chairing of research manuscript meetings, development and implementation of journal policy in the research section, and coordination with non-research content
  • Handling a proportion of the Research manuscripts submitted
  • Providing mentoring and consultation on manuscript assessment and handling for staff and freelance editors
  • Advocacy for PLOS Medicine in the clinical research community
  • Possible management of some journal staff
  • Coordination of the journal’s pool of statistical reviewers
  • Participation in editorial writing, along with writing of blog entries, press releases, editors’ summaries and other related material as required.
  • Involvement in the development of PLOS–wide initiatives in medical publishing

Qualifications and Experience
