PLOS (the Public Library of Science) is a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization located in San Francisco, CA, USA and Cambridge, UK Our mission is to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication. Everything that we publish is Open-Access – freely available online for anyone to use and we maximize the value of this resource through technology.

PLOS has a global team of more than 180 people working in our editorial, production, information technology, administration, marketing, communications, and advocacy teams. Front-End Software Engineer

PLOS is using the best of web technologies to revolutionize scientific publication. We are looking for a talented and creative front-end engineer to join the PLOS development team in our San Francisco office. You will create user interfaces that are used by over 5 million people that visit the PLOS journals every month. You’ll be working within a small, cross-functional team that includes both researchers and designers in addition to working with other staff from PLOS and outside consultants and advisors.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Product and Development teams to bring wire-frames and mock-ups to life using HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript.
  • Work in an agile environment.
  • Create clean, functional, and extensible cross browser code.
  • Collaborate on the design and implementation of new features.
  • Research and adapt new technologies quickly in a dynamic work environment.
  • Work with the Product team to define new features and create technical requirements.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 3 – 5 years of experience developing web pages for commercial web sites.
  • Expert knowledge of JavaScript.
  • Experience working with JavaScript libraries like jQuery, backbone.js, Google Charts, d3.js, etc.
  • Proficiency with Photoshop, GIMP, or related tools.
  • Mobile web development experience a plus.

PLOS ONE Freelance Editors

We are looking for consultants with editorial expertise who can provide freelance support to our PLOS ONE editorial team.

The ideal candidates will be confident and highly organized self-starters with first class communication and problem solving skills. Previous experience working in a fast paced environment is a must.

Services provided by consultants will include the assessment of submissions to the journal, involvement in the oversight of the processing of submissions through the peer review process and collaboration with the journal editors and the editorial board.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proven experience in STM journals publishing and editorial roles, as well as a good understanding of online scientific communication.
  • Applicants with clinical experience or wide medical knowledge would be particularly welcome.
  • Skill in critically evaluating medical/scientific research manuscripts.

Product Manager

We are currently looking for a talented Product Manager to join our Product team within our San Francisco office.  The ideal candidate will be a confident and highly organized self-starter with first class communication and problem solving skills. Previous experience working in a fast paced environment is a must.

The Product Manager will be responsible for planning product strategy and implementing new products and product enhancements. They will design products from existing ideas, and help to develop new ideas based on industry experience and contact with key stakeholders.  The individual in this position must possess a unique blend of technical savvy, a big-picture vision, and the drive to make that vision a reality. The Product Manager must enjoy spending time in the larger scholarly community to understand the challenges, and find innovative solutions for scientific communication.

The Product Manager must be able to communicate with all areas of the organization. He or she will work with technical, production, and editorial departments to define product direction and requirements. The Product Manager will work with marketing to define the rollout and product marketing strategy, helping them understand the product positioning and key benefits. This role will also serve as the internal and external evangelist for product offerings, occasionally working with the outside stakeholders as well as internal PLOS management and staff.

The Product Manager’s role is strategic as well as tactical, ensuring that the product plans fit with the organization’s strategic objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Managing product life cycle from strategic planning to tactical activities for one or more key products within PLOS’ product suite through market requirements, product implementation and positioning
  • Be an expert with respect to the competition.  Specifying market requirements for current and future products by conducting market research supported by ongoing contact with stakeholders
  • Deriving and articulating solutions from a diverse set of requests across the organization
  • Working with marketing and others to implement product rollouts and track success of projects after rollout
  • Analyzing potential partner relationships for new products and initiatives
  • Define the product strategy and roadmap
  • Lead an agile development team as Product Owner.  Deliver product direction and requirements/stories with prioritized features and corresponding justification
  • Run beta testing and pilot programs with early-stage products and samples

Qualifications and Experience

Program Coordinator, Training

The Training Program Coordinator supports the development and implementation of a publications staff training program under the guidance of the Documentation & Training Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Training planning and coordination
    • Coordinate and organize the scheduling, enrolling, and logistics of training workshops, skill-building lunch conferences, and project-process-related training of staff (e.g., when editorial/production processes are implemented or changed).
    • Schedule training sessions and coordinate with participants
    • Prepare materials for training sessions (e.g., handouts, certificates, collaboration tools, refreshments)
    • Conduct pre- and post-training assessments
    • Collect and monitor training metrics
    • Respond to queries in the training inbox
  • Curriculum development
    • Identify and refine core cross-journal training competencies
    • Develop learning modules to deliver training on core competencies
    • Assist journal teams in incorporating learning modules into existing employee onboarding and professional development activities
    • Identify opportunities to sync core competencies across audiences (e.g., staff, authors, Academic Editors, vendors)

Key tasks include providing a professional service to authors and reviewers, assisting them with the submission system and supporting the editors working for the journal. Applicants should have good IT skills and experience with online systems or databases would be an advantage.

The ideal candidate will be a confident and highly organized self-starter with first class communication and problem solving skills. Previous experience working in a fast paced environment is valuable. Senior Editor, Medicine

We are currently looking for an experienced Senior Editor to join our team in either our San Francisco or Cambridge, UK offices.

As an integral member of the editorial team running an open-access international medical journal, the post-holder will be responsible for assessing research manuscripts, handling peer reviews, commissioning articles and contributing to other parts of the journal – as well as to PLOS as a whole.

Responsibilities:

  • Handling a proportion of research manuscripts submitted to the journal from submission through peer review and publication, including presenting manuscripts to editorial team, interacting with reviewers and academic editors around manuscript assessment and review, and clearly communicating decisions to authors.
  • Being involved with editorial writing, press releases, editors’ summaries and other related materials
  • Participating in the daily running of the journal, including non-research content
  • Being involved in the advocacy activities of PLOS Medicine and PLOS

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Advanced (MD, PhD, or equivalent) Degree is required.

Senior Research Editor

PLOS Medicine the flagship open-access general medical journal is seeking an experienced editor to join the team that runs the journal.

This is a senior position, in which the successful applicant will be expected to provide leadership for the research section of the journal. The position is full time and could be based in either of our editorial offices in San Francisco, USA or Cambridge, UK.

Responsibilities

  • Oversight of research manuscript processes and policy, including initial triage of manuscripts, chairing of research manuscript meetings, development and implementation of journal policy in the research section, and coordination with non-research content
  • Handling a proportion of the Research manuscripts submitted
  • Providing mentoring and consultation on manuscript assessment and handling for staff and freelance editors
  • Advocacy for PLOS Medicine in the clinical research community
  • Possible management of some journal staff
  • Coordination of the journal’s pool of statistical reviewers
