ABOUT PLoS

As I have been impressed by the quality of papers published in PLoS Biology, I want to tell you how delighted I am to have one of my own accepted in this journal. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of our study, PLoS Biology was our clear first choice."- Eric O. Long, Ph.D.

Creative Director

Maggie Brown, MS, ELS

Senior Production Editor

Maggie BrownIn previous lives Maggie has done research on parasitic diseases of humans and on bird ecology. The former resulted in, among other things, a lifelong wariness of raw foods. Some of the latter work became her MS thesis on social behavior and population genetics of Harlequin ducks (UC Davis, Ecology, 1998). For six years before being hired by PLoS she ran her own freelance copyediting business from her tiny home office on the coast of Maine. She is a staunch supporter of open-access publishing as a way to both facilitate research for scientists everywhere and allow the public greater access to scientific information. She is an avid gardener, is locally famous for her sourdough bread, and makes art from recycled subscription-only scientific journals and other found objects. Although she lives and works in Maine, she does not like lobster, which she says is "just a giant insect."

Kathleen Erickson

Senior Production Editor

Kathleen Erickson Kathleen Erickson started her publishing career as a copyeditor and science writer/editor for Business Week magazine. While in New York, she was a copy editor at Charles Schribners & Sons and Holt, Rinehart, and Winston and was managing editor of several interdisciplinary scientific journals. At AT&T Bell Labs, she managed 250 documentation projects, and taught writing, editing, and designing. She also edited Web and print encyclopedias for UNESCO, Elsevier, and Encyclopaedia Britannica. Since 1996, she has been the English Editor for the International Institute of Biophysics in Germany. As Editorial Director for the Institute for Contemporary Studies Press in Oakland, California, she produced books on global land management, African community economic systems, and U.S. public policy. Kathleen has a graduate certificate in publishing from Stanford University, and a bachelor's degree in linguistics and economics. She is thrilled to join the global community of authors, editors, and creative professionals at PLoS, providing free access to scientific information.

Alexis Mogul

Senior Production Editor

Alexis Mogul Alexis is the Senior Production Editor for PLoS Biology. After getting BA from Vassar in physics and an MS from Cornell in applied physics, Alexis decided that research was not quite her cup of tea and instead took a job at Science as a copyeditor. There, she was in charge of editing biological and physical sciences manuscripts and coordinating the production flow. She moved to California in 2006 and is thrilled to be a part of the PLoS team. When she’s not helping to create order out of chaos at work, she’s doing so at home, taking care of her twin babies born in December 2006.

Nicole Sheikh

Assistant Production Coordinator

Nicole SheikhNicole was born and raised in Woodside but left sunny California to spend four glorious years in rainy Eugene, OR where she obtained a degree in Journalism, focusing in magazine writing and photojournalism while trying to keep her feet dry. Before joining the PLoS team as a Production Assistant, Nicole held an editorial internship with Gentry Magazine and continues to write as a contributing editor at West Coast Performer Magazine where she reviews live music performances in the Bay Area. Oh yes, and she has a keen interest in science and health, which brings her to the good fight for open-access publishing here at PLoS. Nicole also enjoys yoga, biking, chocolate and playing with her cat.
