ABOUT PLoS

As I have been impressed by the quality of papers published in PLoS Biology, I want to tell you how delighted I am to have one of my own accepted in this journal. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of our study, PLoS Biology was our clear first choice."- Eric O. Long, Ph.D.

Peter Binfield

Publisher, PLoS ONE and the Community Journals

Peter Binfield After graduating with a PhD in Optical Physics from Aberdeen University, Pete Binfield began his publishing career at Institute of Physics Publishing in Bristol, UK as a Commissioning Editor in their books program. From IoPP, he moved to Kluwer Academic Publishers (KAP) in the Netherlands, where he ran their Major Reference Work program (encyclopedias and handbooks) and then held a variety of positions at KAP, including the management of the Physical Sciences group (Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry) and the directorship of the Plant Sciences and Earth & Environmental Sciences division. KAP merged into Springer Publishers, and during that period he held a position in Business Development, working on projects such as e-books, e-reference works and the Springer Open Choice program. In 2005 he moved to the US to live in California and work for SAGE Publications running their successful US Journals Division (some 220 journals across medical and social sciences). Since April 2008, Peter has been running PLoS ONE, and in September 2009 he also took on overall responsibility for the PLoS Community Journals.

Catriona MacCallum

Consulting Editor (also Senior Editor, PLoS Biology)

Catriona MacCallumCatriona MacCallum was the Editor of Trends in Ecology & Evolution for more than four years, from 1999 to 2003. At TREE, she was responsible for commissioning a diverse range of article types across the field - from news to reviews and opinions - taking them through peer-review and ensuring they were accessible to a wide audience. She brings this experience to her new role at PLoS, which she sees as a unique and challenging opportunity to work even more closely with the community and to ensure that high-quality scientific research is communicated more widely. Catriona grew up in Scotland and studied Zoology at Edinburgh University. She remained there to do a Ph.D. with Nick Barton, who introduced her to a broad range of population genetic, ecological and statistical work. Her thesis (October 1994) described how a habitat preference affected the genetic architecture of a hybrid zone. In 1995, motivated by a need to apply ecological and evolutionary research, she spent a year in South Africa as a postdoc with Rudi van Aarde researching the impact of edge effects on the restoration of a coastal dune-forest in KwaZulu Natal. Before returning to Edinburgh to take up a teaching post under Aubrey Manning, she also briefly helped with the meerkat project in the Kalahari, run by Tim Clutton-Brock. She became Assistant Editor of TREE in 1998, and succeeded Andrew Sugden as Editor when he moved to Science the following year.

Emma Veitch

Consulting Editor, PLoS ONE
Senior Editor, PLoS Medicine

Emma VeitchEmma Veitch graduated in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge in 1996, and subsequently moved to London to do a Ph.D. with Anthony Graham at King's College London. Her work at King's focused on the role of neural crest cells in the development of pharyngeal arches in the chick embryo. There she became passionate about the Web and its potential for transforming scientific communication. Having learnt about the open access movement which was taking shape at that time, she joined the then fledgling BioMed Central as an editorial assistant, and subsequently senior assistant editor. At BioMed Central she handled peer review of primary research papers, as well as project-managing development of online submission and peer review systems. Emma subsequently moved to another fledgling operation published by Elsevier's FIRSTConsult, an online clinical decision support tool. There she oversaw commissioning and peer-review of new content for the site and furthered her interest in clinical research. Delighted to make a return to the world of open access publishing, Emma is thrilled to be initiating a project where she can combine her enthusiasm for biomedical research with experience developing electronic publishing systems.

Lindsay King

Publications Manager

Lindsay KingLindsay King came to PLoS after recently graduating with a BSc in Natural History and Marine Biology from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. She has a passion for museums, particularly those with a scientific or natural history focus and believes that science should be accessible to all, which is why she feels PLoS is the perfect organisation to work within. Lindsay was born in Cambridge and possesses an encyclopaedic knowledge of Cambridge pubs and an irrational support for Cambridge United Football Club. Lindsay’s role within PLoS is focused around PLoS ONE and assisting the Managing Editor.

Danny Krueger

Publications Assistant

Danny KruegerDanny is from the beautiful but small town of San Luis Obispo, California. He moved to San Francisco in 2001 to attend San Francisco State University. Upon graduating with degrees in English Literature and Theatre Arts, he immediately put his studies to good use bartending in an Irish pub named after Oscar Wilde. Eventually, he thought a more traditional schedule might be nice, so he took a job at UCSF providing administrative and financial support in a women's reproductive health research center. He rather enjoyed learning about public health policy and helping, in a small way, to bring reproductive health care to people that need it the most. Eager to transition into publishing, and having close ties to some pro-PLoS biology students, he thought that PLoS would be a perfect place to combine his interests and experience. He keeps busy most of the year acting throughout the Bay Area in plays or with the sketch comedy group Killing My Lobster, and he even shoots an occasional commercial.

Jennifer Laloup

Publications Assistant

Jen graduated from Colorado State University in 2005 with degrees in Speech Communication and Technical Journalism.  Shortly after graduation, she began to work for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS where she assisted their Science Unit.  This event initiated Jen's interest in sharing scientific developments with a broader audience.  In 2007, she decided to make the move to San Francisco where her internship with Wired Magazine increased her enthusiasm for open-access information.  Jen is excited be in San Francisco and at PLoS ONE.  In her spare time, she enjoys developing her baking expertise and all things outdoors.

Katie Sabo

Publications Assistant

Katie SaboOriginally from Pittsburgh, Katie graduated in 2006 with a degree in history from Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Following her matriculation, she spent time traveling, working in construction, dishwashing, and interning at an interaction design firm before packing up two suitcases and moving to Northern California. When she’s not working at PLoS, Katie can be found standing by the stove in her apartment stirring steaming pots of jam, sewing clothing, biking and editing the magazine caterwaulquarterly.com.

Anne Tran

Publications Assistant

Anne TranAnne graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in Biology and a pink Slugs hat. Her original plan was to stay in school, but dalliances in computer programming, creative writing, and half-baked theories about the molecular basis of superpowers told her that any single subject would not likely hold her attention for very long. Instead, she turned to publishing to learn about the dissemination of all categories of information, and also to satisfy her inner grammarian. When not working, Anne can be found taking leisurely strolls on the shady side of the street, shopping for six hours and coming home with only new socks, or voraciously reading vampire fiction with a lukewarm coffee in hand.

Liz Hart

Publications Assistant

Liz graduated from the University of Delaware in 2005 with a degree in Mass Communication and no idea what to do next. A year after graduation, she happened upon the wonderful world of Publishing as an Editorial Assistant at Elsevier in Philadelphia. While she loved what she was doing, she was ready for a change of scenery and in 2008 made the move to San Francisco. After a year and a half of conquering the Temp Job, Liz is excited to be back in Publishing. When not working, Liz can be found reading, traveling to exotic lands, or watching bad movies with her friends.

Alexis Lopez

Publications Assistant

Originally from the East Bay, Alexis graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Integrative Biology and a minor in Ethnic Studies in 2007. During his time at Cal, he enjoyed traveling throughout Latin America, expanding his breadth of Spanish language and Latin food. Following a trip to Costa Rica, he spent two years at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco learning about bioethics, in and out of the intensive care unit. He has future plans of attending medical school but in the meantime will be at PLoS. When not working he enjoys traveling to new places, trying new foods and restaurants, cheering for Cal football, and finding new music to listen to.
