IT/Web Team
Richard Cave
IT Director
Richard oversees the I.T. and Web teams at PLoS. A huge proponent of Open Source software, he was drawn to the passion surrounding Open Access advocacy at PLoS and the commitment to make scientific knowledge freely available to the public. Richard brings more than 15 years of development experience working with start-ups and established companies on projects ranging from natural language processing, database engineering and administration, IT service management software, low-level file routines, a free interactive skateboarding simulation and the Open Source application framework Xaraya. Richard obtained a B.S. degree in Cognitive Science from U.C. San Diego, during which time he also developed a passion for surfing which still beckons him to the cold waters in northern California and warm waters in tropical locations.
Bill O'Connor
Senior Java Programmer
Susanne DeRisi
Senior Web Producer
Susanne joined PLoS in 2003, committed then as she is now to radically changing the landscape of scholarly publishing. She has been professionally producing Web sites since 1995, managing projects from concept to completion and beyond. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz and her Master of Library & Information Science from San Jose State University. Susanne aims to support the mission of PLoS by developing Web sites that are informative, engaging, and empowering public resources. Susanne is married to "the" Joe DeRisi, a fervent supporter of open-access publishing and editorial board member of PLoS Biology.
James Harney
Web Producer
James comes to PLoS from a political theory background, where his studies in issues surrounding intellectual property led to his interest in advancing the freedom of information and ideas, and his commitment to the open access movement. He has a B.A. in Government and Philosophy from Cornell University and an M.A. from UC Berkeley, where he is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science. Originally from Detroit, James now lives in San Francisco with his partner, who works at another local nonprofit.
Mike Hernandez
Support Technician

Josh Klavir
Systems Administrator
Josh brings nearly a decade of experience with Systems Administration and Network Engineering to PLoS. When he's not keeping track of vendors, sniffing packets, or creating cron jobs, Josh enjoys BMX and mountain biking, camping and backpacking, and harassing his cats. Josh's favorite thing about technology is the GPL.
Dragisa Krsmanovic
Java Programmer
Dragisa Krsmanovic is a Java developer originally from Serbia, who is passionate about open source software and the semantic web. His interests are RDF, OWL, electronics, making furniture, and baking bread. He enjoys solving difficult problems and doing the dirty work, including diaper changing as a proud first-time dad.
Nikolais Linsteadt
Publishing Systems Analyst
Joining PLoS in 2007, Nikolais manages the journal management system and its related internal processes and procedures. With a B.A. in English and a certificate in editing and publishing from CSU, Chico, he has a background in publishing and technology: he worked on the editorial staff for Flume Press, spent some time as a contracted copy editor for magazine articles, and worked for several years as a computer operator programming web applications, operating mainframes, configuring phone switches, and providing technical support. When he's not supporting PLoS's fabulous mission, he enjoys digital photography, ballroom dance, and being outdoors.
Joe Osowski
Java Web Developer
Joe Osowski is a Web developer originally from Philadelphia. He's passionate about open standards, open source software, and development tools. His interests are social media, eating well, camping, backpacking, skiing, guitar, and music. Most importantly, though, he finds it's important to get offline to balance out all the time he spends online.
Scott Sterling
Semantic Web Developer
With a degree in physics and astrophysics from Berkeley, Scott naturally pursued a career in technical theatre. Later, working in a chemistry lab, he was distracted by the nascent internet; a bit of dabbling and his fate was sealed. While creating security software for the Stanford School of Medicine, he became addicted to the warm-fuzzy feeling of scientific philanthropy. That craving, to support the research which will ensure a bright and bountiful future for our species, has led him to PLoS. When he's not helping save the world with science, Scott can be found reveling in nature, soaking up the exquisite culture of the Bay Area and, with every breath, dreaming of the stars.
Sebastian Toomey
Web Designer
Sebastian is the UI designer and HTML developer for the PLoS journals. He was a professional woodworker before deciding he wanted to keep all ten of his fingers and abandoning the table saw in favor of a keyboard. He holds an MS in Architecture/Industrial Design from Georgia Tech and has over eight years of experience in web and user interface design. Sebastian is passionate about Open Access and the democratizing power of the internet. He enjoys making art, surfing (in the ocean, not the Web) with his partner, Janna, and building sand castles with his five year-old daughter, Ava.
