Head of Customer Experience

PLoS, the world’s leading open-access scientific publisher is seeking a talented, experienced, and creative Head of Customer Experience. The Customer Experience function will support PLoS’s mission by making it easier for customers to work with PLoS, accelerating time to publish, increasing productivity and capacity, and reducing the average cost per paper. The Head of Customer Experience will define, develop, and execute initiatives to achieve superior customer experience across their entire interaction with PLoS.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership for all Customer Experience initiatives across the organization.
  • Manage all customer service functions, including staff and outsource vendors.
  • Establish Customer Experience project priorities and recommend appropriate funding and workflow improvements required to successfully execute them.
  • Structure, develop, and lead functional and project teams to achieve Customer Experience initiatives in alignment with operational imperatives and strategic objectives.
  • Establish, track, and report metrics and milestones with respect to Customer Experience initiatives. Identify connections between Customer Experience initiatives and overall strategic and business objectives.
  • Develop evaluation tools to measure and analyze the impact of the customer experience program.
  • Evaluate and track key touchpoints in the customer experience to eliminate defects, recover from service failures, and deliver “wow” moments.
  • Drive customer-centric decision-making throughout the organization with clear accountability for improvement and linkages to individual customers and business lines.
  • Develop and review Customer Experience scorecard and provide input on required actions.

Education & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Business or relevant field; MBA or MS preferred or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of leadership experience, including extensive specific experience leading customer service and customer experience, preferably in multiple industries
  • Strategic thinker with extensive experience in driving cross-functional improvement programs and leading organizational change
  • Extensive understanding and experience with technology (e.g. CRM, Portals, IVR) and best practices for how to deliver an outstanding Customer Experience

Finance Manager

PLoS is seeking a talented, experienced and creative Finance Manager to join our dedicated team in San Francisco.  In this role you will be responsible for providing value-added analytics to the organization and will develop financial models to manage and improve our business operations.  This role will also lead the FP&A function and will lead a small team of analysts that will serve as business advisors within the organization.

This position provides excellent exposure to all areas of our business as well as the growing and dynamic world of open-access peer-review publishing.

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the Finance Manager will be:

  1. Financial Analytics and Modeling

    • Perform complex business, operational and investment analyses.
    • Develop financial models to assist in resource planning and forecasting; identify key cost levers and drive operational efficiencies
    • Develop KPI’s to monitor business performance and identify areas for management attention.
  2. Financial Planning and Analysis

    • Oversee the financial planning, budgeting and reforecast processes.
    • Own financial management reporting.
    • Oversee the Finance team and also personally deliver financial analyses and ad hoc reporting to facilitate decision making.
    • Work with the Director and analyst team to design the appropriate KPIs for the organization for active monitoring.
    • Maintain the financial database required for accurate financial analysis reporting.  Actively work with team to create more efficient and effective delivery of financial and operational analysis
  3. Business Intelligence

    • Be the lead architect to design and build the Business Intelligence systems and BI delivery processes.  Position requires partnership with IT to integrate BI into overall IT roadmap.  Person will lead effort to review various BI reporting platforms for real time data drill down and visualization capabilities.
    • Person will build the BI system, service and process from the ground up.  This requires an ability to assess current and future development for a phased implementation.
    • The BI build-out will require a redesign of current chart of accounts, project accounting, and business data design capture in order to create the data marts to facilitate high powered analysis for data driven decisions.
    • Create dashboards to report relevant KPIs to monitor and allow for proactive management
    • This position requires deep knowledge of BI systems and past experience with implementation.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Finance and/or Economics required. MBA desired.

Senior Financial Analyst

The Senior Financial Analyst is a new role that will provide the right person with an opportunity to act as a business advisor and influence business processes through comprehensive analysis.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of the Senior Financial Analyst will be to:

  • Understand business drivers and conduct analysis of business processes and financial impact questions to continuously improve the business.
  • Act as business unit controller for cost center support including budgeting as part of the annual financial planning cycle and monthly budget to actual variance analysis.
  • Develop KPI metrics that are appropriate for the business. Track and report KPIs for management monitoring for more timely adaptive management.
  • Team with the Business Intelligence Analyst to develop integrated business information and analytical tools to support fact-based decision making.
  • Conduct onsite visits for our outsourced vendors as part of understanding and managing our open-access publishing supply chain management.
  • Spearhead special projects such as activity-based cost analysis, vendor contract analysis, business case support (NPV), policy/procedure development, and ad hoc research and reporting needs. Individual must know how to design and develop such special project analysis through past work experience.

Education

Senior Editorial Manager

The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a non-profit online digital media publishing organization employing more than 100 professionals in San Francisco, California and Cambridge, UK. We are looking for an experienced Senior Editorial Manager to join our rapidly growing team in San Francisco.  The Senior Editorial Manager role is both strategic and tactical and is responsible for managing the complete administration process for the open access academic journal PLoS ONE, currently the largest academic journal in the world.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the end-to-end administration process of PLoS ONE including making decisions on the most appropriate administration processes to support the peer review and editorial processes of PLoS ONE as well as planning and status checking the implementation of those processes
  • Monitor and report on journal administration Key Performance Indicators and work to optimize and improve them
  • Manage a team of Editorial Managers including providing coaching, development and mentoring
  • Provide advice and guidance on the majority of complex editorial issues
  • Screen and appoint outsource vendors.
  • Manage existing outsource vendor relationships at the level of developing and setting targets, contract negotiation and invoice approval
  • Prepare budgets and identify efficiency improvements
  • Input and decision making authority into upgrades and improvements to Editorial Manager (EM) peer review software
  • Work collaboratively with PLoS senior management including Head of Customer Experience, Head of Production and Head of Marketing to develop and implement cross departmental initiatives
  • Participate in the strategic decision making and planning process for PLoS ONE

Requirements

9+ years of progressively responsible publishing experience of which 6 years have been spent in a managerial capacity

  • Experienced people manager with a track record of managing increasing numbers of direct reports with proven experience building and developing teams
  • Experience managing the peer review process of (ideally) a large, complex and rapidly evolving journal
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and implement creative solutions including process improvements to gain efficiencies; organizational structure changes and updated journal policies
  • Experience managing 3rd party vendors and outsourcers

Editorial Manager

The Editorial Manager on PLoS ONE is a senior member of the journal editorial administration team and has overall responsibility for a specific major component of the PLoS ONE editorial admin process. The Editorial Manager line manages staff, and is a principal point of contact for the journal for other departments internally and for external contacts relevant to that publication. This position is based in the US. The Editorial Manager is also required to work on cross-journal projects and provide some cross-journal management support.

Note: This position works on the administration side of the journal and has no responsibility for dealing with content or content policies (there is a separate team of editors who cover that aspect of the journal).

Journal management

  • Overall responsibility for elements of the journal administration and assignment of tasks within their team, plus oversight of freelance and outsource staff if relevant.
  • Ensuring that the standard editorial processes are robust and are being followed according to established objectives
  • Identification of opportunities for improved efficiencies and customer service
  • Oversight of relationship with Editorial Board
  • Fielding inquiries from the media
  • Contribute to journal development in collaboration with senior editorial staff and the Senior Editorial Manager
  • Monitoring and analysis of journal statistics – and taking action where needed

Cross-journal work

  • Liaison with the (cross journal) Publications Team and taking responsibility for certain assigned tasks (eg coordination of pricing increase information across journals, providing editorial input for web projects etc).

Production Coordinator

We are currently seeking a Production Coordinator to manage and provide quality control for electronic manuscript files and graphics accepted for publication. The candidate will work with a team of coordinators to execute the timely publication of articles.

Production Coordinators also work with authors to ensure that their submissions are complete and assist them with production related questions and issues. The candidate will perform light copyediting tasks while preparing files for composition, be responsible for tracking files in multiple stages of production and perform quality control reviews on final files.

The ideal applicant will be very detail-oriented, highly organized and be able to work cooperatively in a team-oriented environment within the Production umbrella.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting authors with manuscript questions and issues (via email and/or phone)
  • Ensuring that figures and tables meet publication requirements
  • Tracking files at various stages of production to ensure timely publication
  • Performing quality control and light copyediting on text files and article metadata

PLoS ONE Editorial Board Manager

The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a non-profit online digital media publishing organization employing more than 100 professionals in San Francisco, California and Cambridge, UK.  We are looking for a talented and creative individual to join our rapidly growing team in the role of PLoS ONE Editorial Board Manager.

The PLoS ONE Editorial Board Manager is a member of the PLoS ONE journal editorial team and has overall responsibility for the onboarding and ongoing development and support of the PLoS ONE Editorial Board.  The PLoS ONE Editorial Board Manager will serve as the principal point of contact for the Academic Editor community (approx. 2,100 people at present) with regards to onboarding, training, mentoring and support matters.  The PLoS ONE Editorial Board Manager can be based in either San Francisco, CA or Cambridge, UK and reports to the PLoS ONE Executive Editor.  This role is an individual contributor who will be part of a two person team responsible for the overall recruitment, selection, onboarding and training of all PLoS ONE Academic Editors.

Position Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for the care and maintenance of the PLoS ONE Academic Editor community
  • Development and implementation of comprehensive welcome materials to effectively onboard new Academic Editors
  • Creation and delivery of training programs designed to facilitate Academic Editors understanding of the peer review process as well as Editorial Manager (EM) peer review software
  • Providing regular web based training on relevant topics including, ethical standards, acceptance criteria and assigning reviewers

Senior Editor, PLoS ONE

The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a non-profit online digital media publishing organization employing more than 100 professionals in San Francisco, California and Cambridge, UK. We are looking for an experienced Senior Editor to join our rapidly growing team in San Francisco.

The Senior Editor (PLoS ONE) is an editorial position working exclusively on PLoS ONE, an innovative, dynamic, award-winning and multidisciplinary peer-reviewed research journal. PLoS ONE is the largest academic journal in the world and is expected to continue growing for the foreseeable future. In order to support this growth, the journal has created a new position, and seeks a senior editorial staff member to oversee the day-to-day editorial running of the journal and to manage the San Francisco based team of editors. The position will be based in San Francisco and will report to the PLoS ONE Executive Editor.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee manuscripts through the editorial process to ensure fast and through review of all submissions
  • Work closely with the in-house PLoS ONE editorial administration team to ensure rapid and effective communication between in-house staff, editorial board members, authors and reviewers.
  • Oversee assignment of manuscripts to Academic Editors and develop processes for handling unassigned papers.
  • Develop and manage procedures for vetting submitted manuscripts, so that inappropriate submissions are dealt with promptly and key publishing and ethical standards are met.
  • Create and maintain protocol documents to ensure smooth running of the editorial workflow
  • Own and manage the relationship with any external freelance editorial groups
  • Work with in-house editors to resolve any issues that arise with submitted and published manuscripts.

Experience and Skills 

  • A PhD in a scientific discipline or similar clinical qualification

Product Marketing Manager

The Product Marketing Manager is a member of a 5 person team located in the San Francisco office, in the vanguard of a growing world wide effort to change how science is communicated.  This position requires an energetic individual with some previous experience working in a Marketing team with strong analytical and tactical execution skills.  This position provides excellent exposure to all areas of our business as well as the growing and dynamic world of open access scientific and medical publishing.

Director of Advocacy

PLoS is in the vanguard of a growing world-wide effort to change how research is communicated. The Director of Advocacy is a new position at PLoS and provides a rare opportunity to be a driving force in this historic transition.  PLoS began as an advocacy organization, and we have strong programs in institutional relations and policy development. We seek to expand the scope of these programs.

The individual we seek will work across the organization at an executive level, leading and ensuring that our advocacy efforts are appropriately prioritized, targeted and executed to maximize our ability to further our broader mission.  The Advocacy Director will have one report, a Senior Manager of Community Outreach.

Key Responsibilities

Influencing Policy Development – International and US

  • This responsibility covers open-access policy and also other practices that are relevant to the broader reinvention of research communication (e.g. research assessment, peer review, reporting standards, open data/open education/open text books, licensing)
  • At the US governmental level by creating the PLoS as an OA publisher success story with proof points and testifying as a spokesperson to Congress.
  • Works with lobbyists and advocates to effect legislative change and influence key discussions

Software Engineers

We are seeking a number of talented and creative Software Engineers with various levels of experience to join our development team in the historic northeast waterfront area of San Francisco.  You will have the opportunity to develop innovative approaches to the assessment, organization and reuse of ideas and data and to make a difference in the transformation of research communication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with members of the development team to enhance core product features and develop new ones
  • Work with cutting edge Open Source technologies
  • Assist the development team in solving technical problems
  • Contribute to the platform architecture
  • Work with the Product team to create technical documentation

Experience and Skills

  • 1-4 years of experience in Java development and in using tools like Spring and Hibernate
  • Strong software design skills
  • Understanding of MySQL and NoSQL databases
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work well both in a team and individually
  • Intellectual curiosity, positive attitude and dedication to the job
  • Contribution to an Open Source software project a plus
  • Knowledge of Agile/Scrum processes a plus

Deputy Editor, PLoS Medicine – maternity cover

We are looking for a talented and creative individual to join our team as Deputy Editor on a temporary basis to provide maternity leave cover.

This position will be based in our Cambridge, UK office and is available for approximately 12 months subject to early return of the permanent post-holder, with a start date of March/April 2012.

Responsibilities

Together with the Chief Editor, the Deputy Editor has overall oversight of research and magazine manuscript process and policy including input into development and implementation of policy. The Deputy Editor deputises for the Chief Editor, Senior Research and Magazine Editors in all areas, manages editorial staff, represents PLoS Medicine internally and externally and takes responsibility for major editorial projects related to the journal and PLoS publications more broadly.

Experience and qualifications

Candidates must have an MD or equivalent medical degree with several years of post-qualification experience (MRCP or equivalent UK, Board certificated US) or PhD in a relevant biomedical field with post-doctoral experience. Considerable editorial experience, ideally at a general medical journal, is essential as are wide medical knowledge and several years’ management experience in a similar environment.
